Well then, please advise where to go if one were in Philly (or Washington DC/Northern VA area )
it's subjective for the locals. I've always thought Phillips was pretty decent, but I don't think any of these spots would do you wrong:

Dalessandro's Steaks & Hoagies is not too far from where my wife grew up. excellent steaks, though not in center city...up in Roxborough, Northern Philly.

I'm sure they are delicious but I never took to the idea of cheese steak. The way I saw it, they put low grade poor quality fatty meat on a hoagie/sub roll and melt a whole bunch of cheap cheese on top. Now that I'm older, overweight with high cholesterol (lowered with meds) and high blood pressure (also lowered with meds), I'll never give the cheese steak a try. My choice of a "meat in bread" sandwich growing up was a Gyro. My favorite place was in Manhattan on 7th Avenue across from Madison Square Garden called Gyro II. They were there for something like 40 years. I used to go there when I was a teen before concerts at MSG. When my son became old enough to enjoy coming into the city to see music in the jazz clubs we would go out for dinner beforehand or just eat at the club. One day I said, "For something different I'm going to take you for the best Gyro you'll ever have." We went to Gyro II and he was blown away. Sadly, about a month or two later I walked by and it was closed......for good. The recipe for their sauce was on the door. That was the secret. The sauce. To die for. I'm glad he was able to taste it before it disappeared. Sorry for going off topic.

Funny as the locals always said Jim's
and Jim's sucked.
Now we can't all go the way to Camden can we ?
