Haha, no, nobody wants to hear my mumbly mush mouth talk about anything. Honestly I had thought about it as a companion to Chatillon Lux, Q&As, product updates, giving a glimpse into the thought that went into things, but I really couldn't pull it off at all. Plus, I think the content well would dry up very quickly and I probably don't have the time to edit and all of that rigamarole.

On the other hand, 100% of Chatillon Lux products are made while listening to podcasts or with Cardinals games on in the background. Well, and stand-up comedy, too. I wholeheartedly believe that podcasts are the greatest thing to ever have happened to doing chores.

Edit: If I were to do anything multimedia-wise, I used to work for a video production company and have a friend with a film degree, so I want to make a video of St. Louis and Chatillon Lux. We'll see, my friend is a brilliant guy, but also a flaky one.

The brilliant flake is a classic archetype. Flawed genius. If you can get them to focus for long enough who knows what can happen.

I'm a fan of podcasts as well - I've listened to some amazing episodes of Hardcore History with Dan Carlin - theres a 5 part series called Wrath of the Khans on Genghis Khan et al, each episode is 3 or 4 hours long and his 6 part series on WWI, Blueprint for Armageddon is amazing. Carlin also does a podcast called Commons Sense dealing with current events of the day. I've spent many hours on exercise machines listening to podcasts.

About the scent:

Johann Farina is widely regarded as one of the patriarchs of the fragrance world. His classic combination, the original eau de cologne, is still as relevant today as it was over three centuries ago. Years after it was created, it was carried at Clamorgan's, a premier bathhouse and gentlemen's grooming salon that attended to local luminaries like Ulysses S. Grant. The Clamorgan brothers were the mixed-race, illegitimate sons of Henry Clamorgan, one of the titans in St. Louis' early history. Despite their second-rate status, they provided the highest level of luxury and carried the finest grooming products in their renowned store, including Farina's Eau de Cologne. This scent is not intended to replicate that master's work, but to provide a new take on it. One that pays homage to the Clamorgan's ability to thrive despite the high hurdles put in front of their success.

Notes include: Neroli, lemon, bergamot, lavender, orange, petitgrain, grapefruit, and yuzu

Shawn, thanks for the latest shipment - it arrived today. I'll be trying out that Colbeck sample in the morning. it smells good. I also got a shipment from Men Essentials full of Chatillon Lux aftershaves - I think I have the complete set but for Fourth and Pine now. As a side comment you may want to ensure that Men Essentials checks caps prior to shipping CL product - I had one with minor leakage (very minor) and a few other bottles where the caps could have been a bit snugger. Otherwise they were well packed and protected. Men Essentials usually does a very good job on the packing so this was probably a one off.

....and thanks too for the chunk of Barnegat Bay shave soap. I'll give it a go tomorrow as well. It smells like a bay rum without the spice or the rum, just straight up bay. It's kind of similar to the Dominica Bay Rum aftershave. I like it.

So today I had the pleasure of using the first of my two items from Chatillion Lux. Colonia Balsamica is the Spring 2016 limited edition scent, and I purchased it in the toner variety.

The scent was excellent. To me Colonia Balsamica is clearly a spring/summer fragrance, so I will prefer using it on these hot days. At the top, I get strong and nearly astringent citruses. While I enjoy this blast of citrus, my favorite part of this scent is the herbaceous elements that pop up after the first 30 seconds. I don't get a distinct clear clary sage or lavender, but it smells like a mix of these two and some florals. The slightly heavier base is a nice vetiver/amber. Someone mentioned that this was inspired by Colonia Assoluta. Whether or not that's true, I don't get much of Assoluta in this fragrance. To me Assoluta is much heavier on the florals, especially ylang. In any case, I really enjoy Colonia Balsamica. I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity and quality of this fragrance, and I'm curious to try the other ones from the brand.

Now, the performance. The scent was lovely, but it was the performance that blew me away. Unfortunately I suffer from extremely sensitive skin that is prone to irritation, swelling, and redness. Consequently it is hard for me to use many alcohol splashes comfortably as they tend to irritate my skin. This one does not. And not only does it not irritate my skin, but it feels like a mix between a splash and a hydrating balm. While retaining all of the moisturizing, healing, and treating properties of a balm, Chatillon Lux's toner manages to somehow avoid being too viscous, and retains the refreshing feel of a splash. The alcohol content is very low compared to other splash products, so I imagine that's why this toner is so comfortable. I was also pleased to see aloe high on the ingredients list, along with various plant extracts that are anti-redness and anti-irritation.

Overall, if I were to assign a rating to this product, I could give it no less than 10/10. This sits proudly alongside Derby City Chop Shop Small Batch Aftershave as one of my two favorite aftershave products of all time. Between the two, this is definitely more moisturizing, though both have great healing properties.

Tomorrow I'll be trying the lavender scent in the aftershave format, which I believe has higher alcohol. I'm curious to see if I can still use this product comfortably despite the increased alcohol content.

NeoXerxes very happy to hear that you enjoy the CB and that, particularly with your nuanced fragrance expertise, you also found the scent pleasing.

CB is the only scent of Shawn's that I don't have and based on your description, that will likely have to change.

Marko I REALLY like Colbeck and look forward to your thoughts. I have been miserly with the sample Shawn sent, trying to make it to July 8th, but after using this morning have barely one dose left. It has edged out Bon Vivant as my favorite, which is really saying something as I love BV and can't wait to grab a full bottle.

NeoXerxes Thank you for the review, I'm very flattered! First of all, you described exactly what I was going for with the toner performance: a splash for balm guys with gentle astringents. Also, the scent was inspired by Colonia Assoluta by adding the jasmine and ylang ylang to the mix, but I'm glad it didn't come off too much the same. So I'm glad to hear that. I will gladly cite my influences, but I definitely want to do something new and unique. So thank you again!

Also, the aftershave splash is only 50% alcohol, so hopefully it's gentle enough. I'm looking forward to hearing about it.

Marko Thanks for both the orders! It's probably my fault for not tightening a cap enough before I sent it up there, but I'll try to remember to bring that up next time we speak. I'm not surprised that they packed it very well, however, because you can tell they have a great attention to detail. So glad MenEssentials is carrying our stuff and hopefully more Canadians pick some stuff up so we can continue sending new releases up their way.

Also, Mark, no problem on the soap sample. I'm curious to get a bay rum aficionado's thoughts on a not-so-rummy bay rum. And I've been thinking more and more about that bay coffee idea. I'll be picking up some stuff to play with on my next fragrance order.

Lastly, kwsher, we're so close, ha! I'll be printing the labels and putting on all the finishing touches this week. Also, we will have some up at Maggard Razors in time for the official release, as well, in case anyone was wondering. And Fourth & Pine will hit the shelves up there soon, as well, as another general FYI to anyone reading.
