get waze, it's probably the best gps app out there, and it's free.
Is that the one that tells you where cops are?

cops, construction, vehicles on the side of the road, if someone near you is using waze, etc...it's awesome.  the system allows you to confirm those items too.  for example, if someone reported that a car was on the side of the road and you drive past that location and it's gone, you can mark it as such.
My friend was telling me about it. I'm taking the family camping next week and we have about a 4 1/2 hr drive. I'll download it and give it a shot. Thanks for mentioning it.

Do I have to have my data turned on to use it?  I only have 2G of data so will it work off line?  I couldn't care less about the "social" aspect, just how to get from A to B with spoken street name turn by turn directions.
From what I just read it does use some data. There is discussion as to how much, but I assume that as long as you aren't using it daily and you aren't on the brink of your data max every month you should be fine.

it's truly a shame that every little thing is used against the monthly data cap...as if we're not already paying out the butt for monthly cell phone costs.

Freddy, you could also check out OpenStreetMap on your phone (it's another GPS app) and just download the map of the area you'll be in so it doesn't use any data. download the app and the map(s) while you're on wifi.

yeah, a lot of people use their mapping functionality as an alternative to google maps for privacy reasons.
