In most cases, I prefer buying directly from the artisan. He or she makes more money that way, and I want them to stay in business.

Don't get me wrong, I love the reputable vendors-you know who they are-and I'll buy from them if the artisan is sold out, or if the deal offered is too good to resist, but when I think of the joy that I get from a beautifully crafted soap, razor, or brush, I want to reward the person who created it if possible.

Excellent topic! 

I prefer to patronize the Artisan directly.  I want my own personal relationship development.  I do understand their partnerships are important, but if I can dial direct, that’s my preference.  

If an Artisan is sold out and I have the window of opportunity to purchase said product, I make the purchase.  If I LOVE the product I’ll reach out with a quick note to the Artisan and let them know I tried to purchase directly, was unsuccessful, but managed to get the product from their vendor.  

Some Artisans drop a product(s) in Limited Edition to give love to their partners. IMO it’s good business to showcase your partners business too.

Shane @ Blackland made an excellent point, the buyer is subject to vendor partner rules of return and warranty and NOT those of the Artisan directly.

Brand loyalty goes a long way in small ponds.

My Dad was a small business owner & I know how important his loyal customers were to his livelihood.. During this current pandemic, many businesses will not survive & unfortunately will have to close. For those of us that are still financially able to spend on our “hobby “, please support the artisan vendors.

I tended to buy from the artisans even if it cost a little more but I also want to support my local vendors too.  I used to make a point of buying directly from B&M but then they stopped shipping to Canada so I really had no choice.  Shipping costs from the US to Canada can be ridiculous and while its not fair to burden the artisan with postal rates that aren't in their control although the rate is variable.  The vendors that I use in Canada are excellent as far as service and selection goes and have always been quick to resolve any issues or problems that arise.  I've spent a lot more money with the one or two primary vendors I deal with than with any particular artisan so I suspect those vendors would be motivated to ensure my satisfaction.  Furthermore, I figure if the artisans didn't want you to buy their products from vendors then they wouldn't deal with vendors would they?

I prefer to purchase directly from the maker if possible. Often have some conversation with the artisan prior the accquisition to make sure to buy the right thing. I like and enjoy this type of personal interaction.

Direct if I can but with current exchange rate I'm trying my best buy used or from Canadian retailers.. Still supporting the US ones I can't get their stuff in Canada though.

I always try to purchase direct from the seller if possible.

I preferred to buy my hardware from the maker, most of the time their warranty policies are different if you don't buy directly from them.
