Bulb vs. Fan

I have and enjoy both bulb, fan and hybrid knots in various brushes. However, if I had to choose just one knot type, it would be bulb.

I like the backbone provided while generally supporting a higher loft for face feel and also believe it offers more control for me as I face lather.

What about you? Any preference and why?

I also have both types, but my favorite are fan shapes. Mostly because I use them in the range of 24mm and they are perfect for my face.

I just received recently a 23mm [set closer to 24mm] Shavemac on the Teiste 2nd group buy and I really like that brush in fan. Only Shavemac 2-band silvertip fan I have but it is a solid performer!

Shavemac is my new favorite. Their knots are superb and you know what you are getting. There is no guessing like with some other makers.

I agree. I love the Shavemac knots- of those I have, I have only lost one hair in any of them. One!

And they perform like no other I own.

Bernd is a pleasure to work with too and the customer service is top notch.

Bulbs the whole way.

The logical part of me says fan because it seems easier to load more evenly. That is to say the soap loads on the side hairs too. With a bulb it seems it only loads on the 'point' and I worry about breakage.

But my face seems to like bulbs for the slightly easier lather release....


Tough choice.

I enjoy a fan knot with the backbone coming more from the hair than the shape. Some hybrids are cool, too, but not a bulb fan. I do have an FS Finest XD knot in a bulb, however, that I do enjoy. Just not enough to make a habit out of it.

I have both and have no preference. Does it whip up a great lather? Does it feel fantastic on my face? Does it spread the lather easily and evenly on my mug? A yes to all three and I'm a happy shaver, fan or bulb.
