Meant to ask the WR2 I have is super smooth and I seem to hear that about any of the gap sizes in this head style. Do you find that you need to strain and pay a lot of attention with the 1.45? Or is it as easy to use with any of the other gap sizes and just a somewhat intimidating number for most.

You didn't ask me...but, IMO, even with a 1.45mm gap and some practice, you'd have to do something really dumb to cut yourself. It's not totally mindless, but it's pretty danged close in SS. It's very forgiving of my bad technique. Much more so than a large gap WR1, 86 or 94....and it cuts noticeably closer than either. Hopefully a little unsolicited input you may find useful, or not. Cheers.

Yes Dragonsbeard we are in the new Golden Age for wet shaving and razor production. In 2011-13 wet shavers were shocked/impressed with the release of new moderns with Feather, Weber & Tradere. Up until then the hobby was exclusively vintage razors. Over the last several years small artisans have created unique brands and brought to the market their interpretations of prior successful razors (ie Techs or Gibbs). Some artisans have grown to create entire “branded” lines of razors whereas others have created a single razor only to be out of business shortly thereafter. And now in late 2019 it seems everyone is coming out with a new razor. It’s exciting and now with the Tradere being rereleased it is almost like completing a full circle. I think the explosion in razor release is similar to that of the shave brushes and only second to the artisan soap makers. Although I’ve only been in it for a few years I’m sure those of you involved in the hobby prior to 2012 can give us newbies an interesting perspective. I’m just glad to have rediscovered this fine hobby.

You make a good point about the explosion of new razor makers and how there just weren’t that many options before. I myself have wondered why so many go nuts on the razor front, but it’s not my AD. Brushes have always been my flavor. Anymore there’s not much I’m interested in, and definitely not in the camp with current trends for the most part. Part of the problem when you exhaust the market. I have a feeling the market overall is reaching an exhaustion point.

It’s particularly humorous that you point out Feather, Weber, and Tradere in that order as my interest in razors has been getting sparked, and the last razors to make me stop and explore beyond my beloved Feather AS-D2 has been a recent Weber and Blackbird acquisition. Tradere always got in there with the fascination, but brushes held me back as I was so focused. For me it definitely feels like things coming full circle with a few new spices thrown in.

It sounds like from JimmyH’s reviews though that a 2nd Gen SB would be up my alley for the most part. I would have bitten when Tradere first released if only the first Gen had a SB design, and part of me now would opt for a 1st Gen SB. My gut tells me it would have the aggressiveness I want while being smoother than the 1st Gen OC.

The tuckaway is the only OC I allow to remain in the den. I tried plenty and just found they were too irritating on my skin. I’ve all but abandoned OCs with a Tuckaway bring the lone exception. For whatever reason that little guy makes Derby green blades sing, and that shocked me greatly as anything ive put green derby in is a trap waiting to be sprung. Lol

It seems to me you might like a RFB OC head like the one on the Gillette #77 set. Smoothest, easiest OC I've tried, with very good efficiency.

I think I had one. It’s hard to remember everything I’ve tried. I decided the difference I felt wasn’t enough to keep it around and just something I like on the Tuckaway as it is so it was easy to let them go. I know I had a new deluxe 18mm tuckaway, certain I had a RFB. The British Gillette’s have always been the best for what I’ve tried in the Gillette realm. I typically prefer modern razors. Best value Gillette would have to be the Aristocrat Jr with the flat bottom. Excellent performance that possibly rivals the flat bottom Gillette Aristocrat with the barbershop handle, but love the looks of the latter.

I wouldn’t mind to see a SB 1st Gen but I won’t wait likely. I imagine I’ll bite when these come out. Stainless is good with me. I had a titanium razor handle that was beautiful, but the weight just felt off. I have times when I use other razors that aren’t stainless steel and slightly enjoy them less because of that. I’ve been lucky in containing my RAD to a degree, but still hit what felt to me like a decent assortment.
