Why the ambiguity in this statement? People complain that social media has too many Trolls etc but wide open statements like this do nothing to curb speculation, false narratives, and conjecture. Statements like this and the reprisal that often follows them garner no sympathy from me. How hard would it have been to say I'm stepping away because of ________________________ the open-ending here will do nothing more than fury the rumor mill and bring the trolls out from under their bridges.
Well, I don't really owe anyone an accounting of why I might choose to take some time to myself, but, to quell speculations for my reasons, I'll lay them out here.
The strain of dealing with the community at full bore is taking an adverse toll on my health, and I feel that it is time for me to step back a bit and allow Barrister and Mann to have more of a traditional relationship with its clientele. There is such a thing as being "too close," and we reached that point long ago. It is not sustainable for me to continue in this vein, and it is impossible for any one person to deal with the community at large without mounting exhaustion. I work 100 hours a week, many of them interacting with my customers in ways that have absolutely nothing to do with my business.
I would far prefer to concentrate on serving my customers to the best of my ability in ways that are actually germane to Barrister and Mann. Often, members of the community forget that soapmakers are people, and instead feel completely justified in putting forth vile, hateful, vicious, and cavalierly callous rhetoric simply because they can. While there are many things that make wet shaving a fun hobby, dealing with personal insults, jabs, and hate mail on a continual basis is rather more than one person can tolerate, nor is it something that it is reasonable to expect of anyone (which is why most companies have customer service teams that spread out the load of such things). It breeds resentment and outright hatred, and, rather than allow myself to get to that point, I have decided to deal with it by stepping away for awhile so that I can focus more on my own life and health.
