What grade badger is it? The bloom looks nice on the knot.

Just arrived

I have been wanting one of these thick handle SE razors for some time.  This is a STAR with a patent date of 1912 so is of the same time as the GEM 1912.  

I purchased this on eBay and for some reason the lady left the blade in the razor.  Except for a bit of rust, the blade does not look as if it was ever used but I disposed of it anyway.  What I found most interesting about the blade is that it does not have the side notches and the razor has nothing to accommodate the notches, anyway.  This blade almost looks like a transition from the wedge blades that were once used in early lather catchers to the notched SE blades we are familiar with today, though that is strictly a guess on my part. Brian (SharpSpine), what do you think? Any ideas?  (I apologize for the even worse photos than I usually post. )

Pretty sure you nailed it Freddy but ShadowsDad will probably be a better source than myself.

Right you are.  Brian (ShadowsDad), like you, is pretty much exclusively an SE razor user.

It's been a very long time since I used a DE razor. I like them, and they do a great job, but they just aren't my first love. But DE or SE I absolutely love aggressive razors. In DE I stopped after the R41 ('13?) was released. The '13 was milder than it's predecessor.

I'm not much into vintage blades but a friend in the UK got my vintage blades that he told me were fantastic once he got them back into shaving shape. He honed them as though they were a Rolls Razor.

The fat handle is wonderful in the GEM version; sort of medium aggressive from what I remember*. I've never used a Star version.

*Many of my razors lie unused and despondent due to my love for the ER '24. I'm trying to make them feel more used. It's like having a harem, except easier. I can't imagine having a harem and never want one.

Well a little duck all the way from Tennessee landed at my house this afternoon  Haven't tried it yet but it smells awesome.
