Asylum Injector Razor Mini-Review

The Asylum AC razor has been on the market for a while, but this injector blade version is brand new.  It has the same styling as its larger sibling and is constructed of 316L steel.  It is not an injector, but a three piece design.  Bullgoose recommend the Schick Proline blades but I loaded a regular Schick blade purchased at my local pharmacy.  Loading was way less fiddly that I thought it would be.  In fact it was so easy that I got it right on the first try.  The fit and finish on the exterior of this razor is excellent.  Inside the top cap there are some grey areas, which may clean off.  Since they are under the hood, they don't bother me.  These are areas that are going to eventually show wear anyway.  The razor comes in a small cardboard box with foam lining and I found no instructions or warranty card.  Three piece razors being what they are, I'm not sure printed intructions are really needed. 

This US made razor is on the heavy side compared to most Schick injectors coming in at 99 grams and that was evident during the shave.  I gave myself a three pass shave this morning using TOBS cream and my usual Proraso White pre-shave cream.  The WTG and XTG passes felt good and the weight of the razor wasn't noticeable.  On the ATG, south-north pass the razor felt heavy.  I usually hold the razor between forefingers and thumb and the head felt heavy and unbalanced.  As far as cutting goes, it felt like a Schick against my skin.  Which Schick? That's hard, but maybe between a G and an I.

This greeted me upon my return home last night from a long Monday at work. 



First use was this morning. It shaves very smooth, which is what I hoped for, as Dave's comparisons Schicks are right in my comfort zone! The first few strokes made me wonder if I had the angle wrong, as I wasn't getting the feedback that I was expecting. But it was shaving! A very nice shave this morning. 

The Proline B-20 is a new blade to me. The P-30 is my go to blade in the Vector and other Schick injector options work the best for me. My one negative comment on the shave was a bit of tingling at the rinse. Was it the blade? Or was I pressing too hard, trying to make that buttering toast sound as I shaved? Whatever the cause, it passed soon and now feels like a very close shave was achieved. I will monitor the whisker regrowth throughout the day. Yesterday's Vector shave was amazingly close and I wondered last night if I'd have stubble this morning!

That was a great review (except for the omission of the jellybean flavors ).  Whiterook's review showed some black "tarnish" or "discoloration", for lack of a better word, although he pointed out that the tarnish was on hidden surfaces, and he thought it might come off at some point.  I have not seen him post anything further about it, so I don't know if anything has changed.  In any case, how was the polishing on your razor?

That was a great review (except for the omission of the jellybean flavors ).  Whiterook's review showed some black "tarnish" or "discoloration", for lack of a better word, although he pointed out that the tarnish was on hidden surfaces, and he thought it might come off at some point.  I have not seen him post anything further about it, so I don't know if anything has changed.  In any case, how was the polishing on your razor?

There is no discoloration. I will snap a photo tonight. It's just not as shiny!

As far as the underside of my razor goes, I simply ignore it. I do like to give my razors a light going over with a soft toothbrush and dish soap if I am putting it aside, this may eventually remove the stuff, or not. Shrug..

I remember when Phil had originally tried to get this project done...probably way back in maybe 2012-2014 when I was still on TSN. iirc, he literally couldn't find a machine shop to do the work reliably...this is also back before there was a competition in this space.

I'm glad to see Phil got his design out into the market.
