Anything that can go wrong will happen while I'm shaving...

Well, this evening I decided I had to try out the Zenith and see how it shaves. The shave was good, but the brush is definitely not near being broken in. Still plenty of break-in lathers to do. Nonetheless, I feel pretty confident it'll be a good brush when more of those tips are split.

Additionally, I ran into this oddity. The blade felt a bit... aggressive is all I can describe it. On a whim, I flipped over the blade and it was smooth as butter all of a sudden for the rest of the shave. Could it be the blade is bent / warped / I dunno? Regardless, I'm glad I gave it a try... it saved the shave. Lol.

Mike, the Karve is indeed a great shaver. Even in the hands of a meh shaver like myself.

I can't help but wonder if this is warping from the way they package the comfort coated blades... in a stack like a tub of Pringles. It certainly hasn't been all of them, unless I got it placed in right quite often. You never know, I suppose. It's good to know I should look out for this, though.

Is that a Camel or a Zenith brush, Eric?

I've been trying to break one in, as I've posted recently. One thing I've noticed... the knot is so tight it won't let the water go. For example: I did a break-in lather yesterday morning... 24 hours later and it's still wet near the glue bump. It's the quintessential Camel Brush.

Additionally, it's weird, like they twisted all of the hairs up before they set it in the glue-base. I think I've experienced this with a previous Zenith... my memory is horrible. It's got a good knot, nonetheless, but it'll be interesting to see if this turns me away from it. I'm trying to get it broken in so I can do a 'fair test'.

(Posted my reply here, as I decided it wasn't fair to take your journal for a ride about my experience. I got my own journal and need to use it. Another one of my shortcomings... I got a lot of them, lol.)

Considering it's really the Twisted Camel Brush, maybe this is the picture I should have used.


Update: So it's not quite as twisted as I originally thought. I think, being its such a tight knot, it appears to be jumbled up. There definitely something odd to the way the hairs were placed, but not as bad as a thought.

I'm sticking to the Camel reference though. Lol.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a new badger brush. Since I have a spare 24mm Trotter handle, I thought I might buy a knot and toss it in here.

I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on putting a badger knot in a wooden handle. Keep in mind, I don't hang my brushes upside down to dry. Am I just asking for rotting wood?

Hey Paul,

I think that if the wood is sealed (coated in polyurethane or what have you), and with a layer of silicone in the socket, all will be well. If in doubt and if this is something you don't want to do yourself, I would recommend sending a note to FreddieP. He coated my birch handle and I think did something similar for Dave. Reasonably priced, too!
