Well. I managed to get a non-lather shave soap: Pacific Shaving. It was at my local grocery store and cheap. I gave it a try this evening. Boy what a horrible experience. I know the lack of brush and lather lead to the poor protection. But I also think the Gillette Guard isn't as good for my skin as my regular razor. I'm trying to figure out my next move: I definitely need to give up the brushless idea. I need to carry proper equipment. Do I also get a cheap DE to use? Try a different disposable? Use some broken glass I find on the side of the road? Lol.

I'm leaning towards the cheap razor... Maybe find a Gillette black handle. They're usually cheap and prevalent... As well as mild.

I need to think about it, though.

(Edit: The cream works both ways... Might try it as a lather. )

Funny read Paul.......well not really funny. People rave about the Gillette Guard, I didn't care for it like you. Hope you find a better option than the glass from the road Big Grin

Thanks Dave.

I did some test lathers after my shave. This stuff has exactly zero residual slickness. Maybe it's how I lathered it?

Nonetheless, I think if I change the soap and use a proper brush I should be better off. I'm still dumping the Guard. However, I need something that is travel (TSA) friendly. Not that I fly often. The Gillette black handle isn't going to pass that test. Maybe a better disposable?

Time to rethink this 'easy' problem. Lol.

If you would like to try a black handle Super Speed, I would be happy to send my 1979 one. It would have been a possible razor for me when I was in high school, if I had not been seduced by the Atra!

Thanks Eric, the offer is appreciated but not needed. I had one of those before. I am definitely familiar with the shave. Just deciding what is my best choice. Decision decisions. Lol.

Basic Mach 3 was my best cart before starting de shaving back in 2007........a lot of different offerings since then. Many speak highly of the Gillette Sensor (2 blades I think)

I was planning on saying the same thing about the Sensor. I have also read positive comments on a Feather disposable razor and the Personna twin blade.

So this afternoon I went back and tried the Pacific shave cream again. I used Pacific on one side, Soap Commander on the other. The razor was the Overlander with a (brand new) tried and true persona comfort coated blade.

The first Pacific pass was unlathered, applied by hand. As expected from the other day, it was horrible. The soap commander, on the other hand, was perfectly fine. For pass two and three, I decided to lather the Pacific soap. While I think it helped a little, It still wasn't a pleasant experience. This stuff lacks a lot imo, including the residual slickness. However, this tells me unequivocally that the Pacific soap is just no good (for me, at least).

So, where do I go from here? Well, I'll just pack soap (a good one!) and a brush for travel. Next, I need to explore the world of disposables. I have a pack of Schick 3 and a pack of Gillette Sensor 3 enroute. Both are mid-level cheap razors. Hopefully one will work. If not, I may try the Mach 3 (as it has a different angle). We'll see how these two work, first.

I feel better knowing that (at minimum) the soap was a dud. Worse than having a bad shave is having one and not knowing why. This is progress, at least.

So this evening I tried the sensor 3 disposable razor, this time with a soap (Macduffs Birch+Root) and brush. What a smooth shave in comparison to last time. So, this is the disposable for me. I have 8 of them, which even if I use one every vacation, lll be good for 6-8 years years. Lol.

I'll probably see the razor through for the next few shaves, just to know how far I can push it. Should last a full week or more, If need be.

Have a good evening everyone!
