the correct handle is pictured in this thread: http://damnfineshave.com/thread-review-g...912-junior

you might have a hard time finding a handle on its own..you might need to buy a second damaskeene.

Yep. I ordered 2. I hope the handle on the second one is in good shape to match this head. I don't suppose the Gem art deco handles will fit the Damaskeenes. Ultimately, my goal would be to have a stock Damaskeene (head and handle) and a replate with an art deco handle. I'm even leaning towards a coat like what Delta Echo does.

"I know next to nothing about vintage SEs, but I am in love with my 1912 Star. I was told a Damaskeene is the next level. Please share anything you know about Damaskeenes in addition to this handle. Thanks!"

I am sorry but I know nothing about that handle. I could guess at Ivory, Bakelite or Celluloid.
The handle on mine is the plain knurled handle like you have.

However I now have 9 Different GEM razors and another on the way.

Every one without exception is an excellent razor and all are very close together for shave quality.
I could very contentedly spend the rest of my life with any one of my precious GEMs.

My 2 favourites by a very narrow margin are the Damaskeene and the Micromatic open comb.
That might change as I try different blades.

My favourite blades are Personna GEM Super Stainless and Personna GEM Blue Star Supers. Both give smooth shaves and are relatively long lasting. Those choices are also always subject to change.

I'm a head and face shaver. If I take 3 passes as per my usual, that probably equates to 6 face-only passes. The Gem Personnas feel great from the start, but I only get 2 shaves out of them. The Blue Stars quit on me before I'm done with one shave. I have discovered Gem PTFEs are my SE blade of choice. They are the smoothest of the bunch and I didn't feel any loss of performance at the end of my third shave recently. It would be nice to know what they would max out at, but I won't push it any time soon. I have a thick head of hair (I'm bald by choice. No male-pattern baldness), and my beard and scalp hair are both coarse. As a comparison, most DE blades I use are 2 shaves max, and many of them are one-and-done. It's a good thing these blades aren't expensive. I shave every other day, though.

I also have a Damaskeene and it's a great shaver. Yours looks to be in very good condition. The art deco style handle will work with it. I love the look of it, but I find it way too small. It's really short and skinny so I rarely ever use it. I have a set screw that I use to attach any modern handle I may want to use. With regards to blades, all I use are the PTFE coated ones. They are the smoothest, longest lasting blades I've used. I just had my 15th shave on one today and it was just as nice as the 5th shave.

Jeff,

I am trying a PTFE now in a GEM Micromatic Bullet. It seems to be an excellent blade.
So far 2 easy PPS's.

BRUSH: LGL custom synthetic.
SOAP: Body Shop Maca Root.
BOWL: Yoresh Electric.
RAZOR: Kamisori & Schick Injector Type 1.
BLADE: Kamisori & Schick Injector.
PASSES: Kamisori 1, Schick 2 & Touch up.
SHAVE: BBS thanks to Schick.
AFTER SHAVE: Aqua Velva Musk. It burned. Really woke me up.

The very first time I shaved my entire face with a straight razor - the Kamisori. It was not a good shave due, undoubtedly, to my cowardice. I held the razor at about 45 degrees instead of almost flat to my face. It gave a rough shave but it did shave - sort of. No bloodshed.
I then switched to the very timid and amiable Schick for the last two shaves and touch up. That turned the shave into a BBS.

Back to the internet teachers for further instructions.

So that's where I left it.
Very careless of me.

I have never seen any GEM's with a custom handle (I am ashamed to say). Very cool looking!
