In the States, the FDA bans the use of Tonka Beans due to the coumarin content. When consumed in excess, coumarin can cause liver damage. It has been banned since 1950 along with any substances containing coumarin.
Products like Delis Fevres de Cacao et Tonka cannot be imported into the States. While you might be able to purchase it in France, I doubt US Customs will allow you to bring a bottle back to the States, at least not legally.
So are the tonka beans used in mallard soaps safe from coumarin, and are the tonka beans used in many perfume brands safe?
