In the States, the FDA bans the use of Tonka Beans due to the coumarin content. When consumed in excess, coumarin can cause liver damage. It has been banned since 1950 along with any substances containing coumarin.

Products like Delis Fevres de Cacao et Tonka cannot be imported into the States. While you might be able to purchase it in France, I doubt US Customs will allow you to bring a bottle back to the States, at least not legally.

So are the tonka beans used in mallard soaps safe from coumarin, and are the tonka beans used in many perfume brands safe?

The U.S. has banned Tonka beans for food use due to the presence of coumarin, a chemical that can be harmful to the liver in large quantities. While Tonka beans are safe in smaller amounts, the FDA has determined that the potential risks outweigh the benefits. As a result, the importation and sale of Tonka beans for food use are prohibited in the U.S. However, they are still available for other purposes, such as perfumes or incense.

This is one of my favorite scents! I'm surprised so many people don't like it Smile But most people don't like Oud!

The key is that the ban is on items used for food and drink. Applying the small quantity of Tonka fragrance to your skin is not going to destroy your liver. However, I would not recommend consuming a tub of Tonka shaving soap or drinking the Tonka aftershave. However, they do smell good enough to be tempting.
