Today I have a pile of jars not one was sampled and all are used on the regular. I have soaps from a few other artisana but I've only ever finished Grooming Dept soaps. I think that's telling- the soaps are top tier quality and the scents are all excellent, some better than others, but even the ones that aren't my absolute favorites are still great. Mo's stuff is the best there is and his perfumery in soap making is the best I've come across- and I've used a lot.

With many artisans, I only purchase soaps if the scents are developed by an actual perfumer rather than the soap maker. For example, that was the case with the DFS/ Murphy & McNeil/ Black Mountain Shaving soap called Horizons. Black Mountain Shaving is a perfumer who makes nice scents.

Grooming Dept/Aion Skincare is the exception to that rule. Mohammad's skill as a perfumer is on par with his skill as a soap maker and skincare formulator. He does not need to collaborate with another perfumer.

Unlike most soap makers who maintain a standard menu or formulations and scents, only interrupting that with seasonal specials, Mohammad is constantly improving the performance of his formulations and he is constantly developing new scents. While samples are not normally available due to this turnover, demand for his products is typically such that if you purchase a scent you do not like, you can probably find someone who does like it.

If you are looking for very simple scents where you can readily identify all the scent notes, then Mo's scents might not be for you. However, occasionally he will have a relatively pure scent like Lavender. If you are looking for scents that are dupes of famous scents, you are likely to be disappointed. Occasionally he might release a scent that will remind you of a famous fragrance, but it won't be a dupe. If you are looking for a signature scent that you can use for years to come, you won't find one unless you stock up on a single scent at one time. Even when a scent seems to be a rerelease of an earlier scent, it is likely to be slightly different.

I currently have about 40 Grooming Dept/Aion Skincare soaps in my collection. I rate the fragrance of 26 of those soaps as 10/10; I love them. The lowest rating I have given any Grooming Dept soap is 7/10. That was for a couple of soaps from the BC era (before COVID). In contrast, I have 36 soaps from other artisans that rate lower than 7, with the lowest being 1/10. I discarded anything rated 5 or lower.

For those who want unscented soaps, look for Clarus in the Optimus formula in an upcoming release.

I'm happy to hear. And I agree 100%!

This Mallard release is extraordinary on every level. The scents are complex, lively, rich, and varied. They are incredibly appealing and accessible to a wide audience.

Regarding the base: This is the fastest-lathering Mallard yet! It is also the densest Mallard, offering a delicate, luxurious lather and a superb post-shave feel.

I didn't want to boast before the release, but now I am Smile I'm grateful to the new duck fat vendor I'm working with. Their product is free-range and organic. Their process to produce the fat is remarkable. I never emphasize those attributes. It's the end product that truly matters.
