A tough snow removal day - March storm pics added

It just started snowing here in SE NH. We are due for 12-18" but they keep refining that. Originally it was supposed to start snowing at 5 AM today. Only off by 8 hours.

I was allowed to work from home today based on original timeline. My wife's school had something special going on and they will be in for a full day. The rest of the surround schools released at lunchtime.

Worse part of storm for us will be tonight. We moved firewood, gassed the generator and snowthrower and put diesel in the tractor. With heavy wet snow and high winds predicted we like to be ready.

Hang tough.

Yup, we're ready as well. We were basically told to brace for blizzard conditions. We can last for a very long time without input from outside.

I'm just disappointed, I was looking forward to an early spring. But no complaints on this winter. It's been fairly easy so far. I just don't want to roll up the sod and the driveway.

Since it snowed into the evening on Thursday I plowed today. The ground wasn't thawed as much as I expected and that was a good thing. This snow storm was the worst of the season. There was a lot of it and it was very heavy and wet. Stop pushing it and it packed into a mass much like concrete.

We got clobbered. 18 inches of heavy wet snow that suck to everything. We lost power for 6 hours and internet for 12.


This is looking down are street.


This is a shot of the "stickiness" of this snow. Usually it accrues on the vertical branches. Here the tree sides are coated all the way up.


This birch fell under the load and the top 10 feet made it to the pond.


Usually the birches just bend. This is our wood shed.


It buried smaller trees and shrubs,


ML and I spent 4 hours clearing this stuff.


The snow blower could throw it. It just could not handle the amount. My blower is 28" wide and I had to use less than half of that to keep from just knocking the snow into already cleared areas. You can see the snow stuck to the augers in a big mass. This greatly reduced the throwers efficiency.


We have suffered through deeper snows than this, But this was unique in my 20 winters here, Wet, heavy, deep and glue like. Hard to snowblow, hard to fully empty the tractor bucket and even harder to shovel. I am still taking Advil today

I neglected to mention my wife. She does more of the shoveling grunt work than I do. She is on the Advil diet along with me.

This is definitely a weird snow. It is 48 hours after the storm and the trees are still covered.




I have never seen such a sticky snow. I can't believe it is still on the trees.


Even the sun and wind are only blowing the fine stuff off instead of having big plops of snow fall off.

You definitely got it worse than we did. Ours' wasn't that sticky.

Wow, Phil! That sure is a lot of sticky snow.

Supposedly it's not going to be the crud that Phil got last time, but another major storm is here and blasting us. It'll be over on Thursday so it'll be here for awhile. Up to 18" for us. Isn't March wonderful?! And we had 2 weeks of springtime weather! I just don't think March cares. Another one spotted on the horizon too, but too far out to make predictions.
