Don't get me wrong, I wasn't preparing. Everything I bought was superfluous or downright silly.

Speaking of silly: I've been on the bay, several times this month, actually considered getting some more blades. You know, because the 500+ each of the two brand I use isn't going to last me a month?!?

Don't get me started on soaps. I can't smell them right now, yet I'm hunting for some new scents. How does that make any sense?!

It's a sickness, I tell ya.

Oh, I wasn't judging anyway. Just throwing it out there for the trolls that always seem to come by these threads and say, "what's the point if you go on a buying spree first". Just being clear that I didn't and wasn't saying anyone else did Big Grin

Good point Dave, and people can be quite negative.

Still, for all of the negativity, they have a good point, too. It doesn't make sense to dump a months worth of money a few days before a Sabatical. Just to be clear, I didn't do that. Lol.

I may feel out of hand, but honestly the items I bought were not excess, voluminous, or expensive ($15 on the bay, $20 to Stirling). I'm not going on a spending spree to buy a months worth of goods (whatever that amounts to). Still, I do want to watch out for that type of splurging leading up to this. It would 'water down' the point, for sure.

So, I am going to keep that in mind between now and 1/1. Do I need it? Can I go 30 days without it? Kinda like Eric and the list his father told him to keep while growing up (did I get that right?).

What do you usually spend in a month on shave gear? Well, whatever that may be, doing it in a sitting or two before you go on sabatical sounds like a spree to me. Lol.

Again, I'm going to avoid doing that.

For me a spree is what I did for the latter half of November with buying lots of brushes, knots, and handles. I have been having a looser spree since April, when I discovered how fun it is to create my own brushes! Now I want to enjoy them, and the rest of my stuff, instead of looking at what else I can buy.

IMO it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.  I think the important thing is for each one to be fully convinced in his own mind about what he is or is not doing.  At any rate, I would not see the point to participating (for me personally, that is) if I did not think I could make up my own mind and be clear about whether I lived up to the letter and spirit of this gentlemanly exercise.  Nor do I see myself having any interest or business in second guessing anyone else's standards or success.

I bought 3 EDPs from PAA yesterday - for me that was a spree. Space Nog, Kiritimati and I Gingerbread Man.  I'm now done.

I'm going to try to apply this shaving gear restraint to all areas of my non-essential consumption.  Its been somewhat bothersome lately that "buying stuff" has morphed from an activity engaged in to acquire necessities to an acitivity engaged in as an end in itself.  I think theres an evolutionary driver at play in driving us to acquire and stockpile stuff - we are descended mostly from hunter gatherers and were still doing it.  I'm not sure our forebears were any better than us in that they didn't spend a ton of money acquiring stuff but rather they had fewer resources and less opportunity.  A lot of the barriers have been removed - the silicon valley types refers to barriers as friction and they seek to write apps, programs or whatever that are frictionless - like buying shaving gear - search, find, click, buy.  Boom done.  No friction.  Now you have a ton of stuff  Big Grin

Well, iGingerbread man sounds like a necessity to me. Lol. The reviews have been outstanding for that scent. I don't use scented aftershave, but if I did, I'd likely be right there with you.

That's an interesting thought on excessive gathering. It brings up another worry... transposing one purchase spree for another. Not that I have another hobby, persey, but I could easily invent one if I'm not mindful.
