I guess it depends on the solution you use and whether or not you have the cleaner apply heat to the cleaning process. also, I'd say that jewelry (assuming it's newer) has much thicker plating than an old razor.

Shaven in the Past
From what I've read and seen this is one of the best ways to get the black crud off without removing the thin silver plating in some O.T. It can be done more than once, but the video I saw showed the baking soda being diluted first in the water prior to immersing the razor. Good luck. I'm on the prowl for an Old Type myself.
