I understand the rational behind open tooth razors. I tried three; 1904 Merkur, ATT and Later Parker. It felt more like I was raking a japanese sand garden- and I have. I was caught up in the enthusiasm for those damned Darwins with candleabra handle and supposed hollowground head duplicating a straight. An english friend has one, his treasured grandfathers and graciously allowed me to try it at his place ( with MWF and Penhaligons AS of course.) That handle was indeed a candlestick and the
shave, even with slow deliberation right out of George Orwell's desciption of his protagonist's shave in 1984. Boy! did I save several hundred dollars I don't have anyway!

R41, Holy Black SR71, and El Jefe are co-winners of the shortest time in the den award. I like aggressive razors but I did not enjoy shaving with these at all. Bye bye.

Every vintage safety razor I have bought so far - Techs, Superspeeds, Slim, Super Adjustable, Old Type, New, G Bar, Clogpruf to name a few. I love the build quality, material of those razors, also can't complain about the price and availability. But none of them has been a good ATG shaver for me, yet.

Like KAV, I haven't been able to get along with pretty much any open comb razor I've tried with the MMOC being the worst. Although, I did get a nice shave from my Gillette Old Type a couple days ago. I think a lot of that could be attributed to the fantastic lather I got from the Mystic Water soap that I used though.

For me it was a slant. I built it up too much in my head, and then couldn't get as comfortable a shave with it as I could with my favorite. So I gave it up early rather than forcing myself to learn it. I enjoy my other razors more and didn't want to spend the time learning to use the slant. Some other fellow is hopefully enjoying it now!

Yeah, the Seygus was terrible. It would've taken 50 passes to get a semi close shave.

Mergers with XL handle - lasted a week or so. Newer DE shaver coming from cartridges and the Mergers was heavy and long.

Ironically purchased at the same time, the revised Goodfella OC which became my daily razor. A Seygus purchased 9 months after that for 2nd razor.

Kav! Thank you so much for saving me much time and money hunting down an original Darwin!

I couldn't get a good shave from a Gillette Slim. Which was strange because I got great shaves from Red Tip, New SC, and Triangle Tech. Eventually the romance of vintage razors wore off for me and now I only use contemporary ones.
