Wilkinson Sword Straight Edge Razor

I saw this at the drugstore last week. Does anyone use it? I’m not sure the configuration. Shavette?

Thanks Dave, that video only reinforces my pre-existing preference for DE razors!When he first started manipulating the razor I thought there was a blade in it and that he was crazy but then realized it was blade-less. I Don have any reason to want to shave with something like that and the video guy’s reference to a lot of blood when shaving with it did nothing to change my opinion. I suppose if money is your only concern, a $24 razor and half DE blades are pushing the limits on the cheapest shave possible. Depending if course on how many shaves you get per half blade.

Mark, I honestly did not even watch the video. I have some shavettes and vintage weck razors and they sit more than they get used but are there if I get the itch. I just get closer and better shaves with single edge and double edge razors.

I guess the attraction is you can get a straight razor-ish shave without all the effort of honing and maintaining the blade. My barber (now deceased) used a shavette to clean up the edges after a haircut. He had a hot lather dispenser too.  I think shavettes are ideal in that context.

These shavettes have interested me since I just got into DE a few months back and the straight razors appeal to me but I know a lot goes into one to get a sharp smooth edge and as a beginner I doubt I’d achieve a good shaving edge.

Also these are fairly cheap and can use any DE blade. But I’ve read many people say they don’t shave like a straight razor and the straights are much smoother shaves. It’s a shame they don’t shave the same because I’d love to test out a straight without all the work starting out. But a good used Boker can be picked up quite reasonably. All the sharpening and honing is what worries me and is going to take many days of research.

If you want to use a shavette, you are much better off with a higher quality one that uses the Artist Club injector style blades than one that uses half-DE blades. The less expensive shavettes often do not have the proper weight and balance to provide a proper shave. If you want a real straight razor shave, either get a high quality shavette or get a real straight razor.
