With DEs you do need to change when tugging occurs because there isn't enough blade material to support a less than supremely keen edge. However, to use this same criterion to determine the death of a SE blade is where you can start crossing over into the blade wasting category.

That makes sense. For the price of SE blades I would expect a lot more shaves too, which it sounds like they provide.

I have to be honest, I don't use a blade more than twice. But it is because I have so many blades that it just doesn't make sense to me. The amount of blades I have are going to outlive me anywaySmile

Most blades I can use for seven shaves, maybe a few more. However, a new blade is used starting every Friday whether I've gotten the full seven shaves out of it or skipped a day or two. Blades are inexpensive enough for me, and I have so many (and periodically experiment with more), that I don't see the need of taking a chance by going that one shave too far.

I usually use Freddy's approach, except that I use each blade for 5 shaves. Just an arbitrary number that seemed to assure I would always have a sharp blade.

Does your beard grow fast and is it full? That would also make a difference on blade longevity. I have a full beard that grows fast and I shave my entire face. I see a lot of people that have mustaches and/or goatee.

There a paltry few modern Gillette blades that I can stretch to seven, which is ironically the approx. max lifespan I got using legendary "Golden Age" blades, e.g., Personna 74, Schick Plus Platinum & Light Brigade Wilkies. Tough Irish beard I guess. That said, most times I bin a modern blade at 3 - 4 shaves. Blades are cheap in the overall scheme of things.

I use them less than they could be used.

The other members at Shave Forums say, ' they are cheap'.

So that's why I use them less than they could be used.
