Olfactory Hue (Cold River Soap Works)
sandal, oud, incense
This smells like some nice synthetic oud mixed with the same sandal that goes into Cold River's Sandalwood soap. It's a warm, earthy scent, with just a wisp of incense smoke. I think the sandalwood comes from western Australia (
santalum spicatum or spiky sandal). I like it very much, even though it's not same sandalwood I knew thirty years ago. Most of us grew up smelling Indian sandalwood (
santalum album or white sandal). But that plant has been harvested to the point that it's no longer available for most large scale perfumery. Though it's harder and harder to find, there's still enough Indian sandal to satisfy small projects. Nanny's Silly Soap, for instance, makes a soap scented with a very nice Mysore sandalwood oil, and the Obsessive Soap Perfectionist also offers a sandalwood soap that takes it scent from "real Indian sandalwood."
