Rose de Pushkar (Le Père Lucien) fresh butter & roses

Pushkar is a pilgrimage and tourist town in western India, sacred to Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. The town’s name literally means ‘lotus blossom’, and until recently, the lake in the center of the town was covered with these flowers. Drought has nearly destroyed the lotuses now, but roses continue to thrive all around Pushkar. They’re renowned for their delicate sweetness, and the oil extracted from them is popular with visitors.

Rose de Pushkar comes in a smallish tub. When loading your brush, it may help to shake out most of the water so that it’s just damp. Turn the tub upside down and keep your brush upright, like you’re chalking a pool cue. That way any sloshed lather will tend to fall back into your brush.

In addition to the smell of delicate sweet roses, my puck of Rose de Pushkar has a buttery scent, like fresh ghee. It disappears when you lather it, replaced by a slight medicinal but not unpleasant smell. When thickly loaded into your brush the soap makes a splendid lather, but it finishes dry and tight. I used a dot of my wife’s rose cream in place of a balm.
