Le Petite Chypre (Barrister & Mann) Aphrodite’s sweat
Chypres are named after the island of Cyprus, the birthplace of the Grecian goddess of love, Aphrodite. Today’s soap, Barrister & Mann’s ‘little Cyprus’, features a stripped down version of the classical chypre accord, just petitgrain, oak moss, and labdanum. This last scent is drawn from the brown resin of the cistus shrub. It sticks to the coats of sheep and goats as they graze. Traditionally herdsmen combed it from their animals’ hair and sold it to perfumers. Slightly rank, but also dry and complex, labdanum is divinely alluring. It has a wild, herby smell that gives chypres a hint of ripeness. Combined with vanilla, it creates the amber accord.
