Warm Woods v. (Meißner Tremonia)
cedar, palo santo, pine, incense
Jammy wood and incense – just the thing for a blustery second day of Christmas.
Warm Woods is as sweet as it is warm thanks to the benzoin, which is really a gum resin, not a wood at all. The word
benzoin comes from the Arabic
luban jawi ‘incense of java’. As that phrase was adopted into European languages it became
benjawi, then
benjoin, and eventually English turned it into
benzoin. One more curious thing I just learned: the
luban part of
luban jawi is the source for the name of the country Lebanon, home of the aromatic cedar of Lebanon, which was long used as incense.
