I've started a new way of shuffling through my soaps. Instead of picking a tub each morning, almost at random, with only the weather, my mood, or a horoscope to guide me, I've determined to fall back on the cold and unteetering logic of my spreadsheet.

It's set up to list each of my soaps by its cost-per-lather, with the most expensive lathers at the top. Each morning I'll use the first soap on the list, record it in the spreadsheet, and then press a button to recalculate the cost-per-lather. If today's soap is still at the top of the list for tomorrow, so be it. If it's a new one, all the more pleasure.

At first we'll see only a handful of new or pricey soaps whose lathers, so far, are quite expensive. But then slowly a few more soaps will work into the rotation as the cost of each lather becomes commensurate with the new soaps. This cycle will snowball until about this time next year I expect that all my soaps should share roughly the same cost-per-lather, and all will be part of the rotation.

The fact is, I like all my soaps and I'm happy to use any of them any morning, but I enjoy a soap most while its scents are still fresh. So I'm looking to balance my love of variety with my longing to ensure that new or expensive soaps don't go stale before they've had at least a dozen good lickings. The hope of saving money by wet shaving is now but a misty dream, but I'm still chasing after value.

That's a very interesting approach to choosing which soap to use. I'm still in the "what's my mood" for today phase. Unfortunately, this method means there are several soaps that might be used once a year. So in my spreadsheet, I'm tracking the soaps that are used less than three times a year and will eventually list them for sale. This was a hard lesson to learn but with only three years of wet-shaving experience, at least I learned it relatively early Smile

I hear ya Bouki. I have gone through a lot of soap purchases. I've pitched some soaps unfriendly to me, PIF'ed some, and even sold a few. Still, I stare at a large stash. At this point, i am doing everything in my power to not buy soaps. I too feel like it's too many and there will be the inevitable waste as scents fade.

I hope the new setup works for you and you are able to capture as much time with the best of the best as you can. I will keep a bit of a selfish urge, however, that we'll still get to read your reviews from time to time. Here's hoping. Lol.

A beautiful spring morning...blue skies, sun shining, birds chirping, flowers blooming, and in the mid-60's. A morning like this deserved a floral scent Happy2

Aha! A statistics guy! I don't have a spreadsheet of soaps but look forward to watching your experiment unfold. And this orange/cedar soap sounds divine. I sure enjoyed a balm from L'Occitane in Orange/cedar I had a while back. By the way, what do you do for a living? I'm guessing Acctuary with all this spreadsheet work.
