This, for me, was an experimental shave to see how I would like this Japanese cartridge system (and the included shave gel, which I wasn't expecting) for traveling. The only review I was able to find was on another shaving board (TSN: http://shavenook.com/showthread.php?tid=26670) and the person, overall, did not care for it. For me, the results were a bit different but for a big reason, the end result. Was the shave satisfactory or better? Yes. Was there any irritation from the shave? No. Is it as satisfying a shave as my usual DE/SE shave? No more so than when I use a Gillette Fusion, Gillette Guard, or Schick Hydro 5.
The handle is fair sized for a cartridge razor, though shorter than the one on the Fusion FlexBall, has a comfortable grip, and, because of its shape, was easy to maneuver around my face and neck. Like the Fusion FlexBall, the blade can move both up and down and side to side. Because of this, going around the contours of the face is pretty easy; very little thought has to go into it. As with most cartridge razors, a certain amount of pressure is needed but not so much as to be uncomfortable to cut through my one day stubble. (Note: I usually shave daily, missing a shave only a couple of times a year, at most.)
The cartridge itself is three bladed, as opposed to the Fusion's five blades. Each of the individual blades can move independently from the others but whether or not this is a huge advantage, I don't know. Interestingly, the Fusion cartridge is about 5mm longer than the one for the SamraiEdge but the actual length of the blades is just about identical. One of the things the gentleman in the review I cited above didn't like was what he considered the short length of this cartridge blade, stating that he had to make more passes and thus making shaving a chore. I do not know if he was comparing DE to cartridge or cartridge to cartridge but when I measured the length of the cutting edge of the SamraiEdge cartridge to an Astra Superior Platinum DE blade I found the latter only about 3mm longer. For me, that is insignificant as to the number of passes I would have to make to complete the shave. Obviously, his experience was different and that's okay as there are too many other variables to consider (shape of face, beard type, etc.).
Like many cartridge razors, I found the balance of the whole to be just fine. It was easy to hold and turn in my hand. As for the Fusion-like pivoting, I liked it. I find I prefer the battery powered Fusion to the manual one but this manual razor was every bit as good as the Fusion Power.
The shave itself was much as I would get from the Fusion Power. Initially, it was quite close, indeed BBS. That BBS feeling doesn't last nearly as long as I get from my best DE shaves but it does last longer than the one I get from the Fusion Power (and I wonder if that has anything to do with those independently moving blades within each cartridge).
Overall, I like the razor and can certainly see myself using it for travel or when a quick at home shave is warranted. The downside is that cartridges are not as easy to come by as those for the Gillette Fusion.
The razor can be had on Amazon for US$11.33 and that includes free shipping. However, it ships from Japan so the wait time before getting the razor can be about two or three weeks.
