I used to think that they weren't very good. But...
I think they are better after the 1st shave.
Maybe Derby Blades aren't all that bad.
Derby makes a premium blade now

I found the Astra SP to be too harsh in my modern razors, a Maggard's V2 open comb and V3 safety bar. My face felt like I'd rubbed it with sandpaper. But before that experience, I had used the Astra SP in a Gillette Super-Speed, and had great shaves. This is the first blade in my experience that worked in one razor and not well in another. I had read comments from others about that but had never experienced it.
Hi Eric, that has been my experience as well - what may be great in one razor is awful in another. This means that every time I get a different razor I have to more or less go through the same trial process which is why its important to keep notes.
I agree, but I have found that Merkur blades suck in any razor that I have tried. On the other hand Gillette Silver Blues and Polsilvers work in any razor I have tried. It's a shame Polsilvers are gone now. I have 200 of them, but I almost want to sell them because I just want to find and use the a blade that works for me and is available for sale. I am ready to try Gillette Platinums now to see if they are just as good. If so I may just go insane and buy a couple thousand to last me a lifetime and be done with blade exploration.

I found Derbys to be stellar in a Merkur 34C, but far less stellar in an Edwin Jagger DE89. Perhaps the question that should be asked is "What is your all time worst blade + razor combination?"

Very interesting. Indeed I would have been trying the Derbys in a DE89 or a super speed. Back in the olden days.
