Book two has so many references that show up in the other books you will need to read that one.

This is one of my top book series.  I have read it a number of times and will have to pull it out and read it again.

Favorite all time line when Arthur is dealing with the local council that is trying to tear down his house.

“But Mr Dent, the plans have been available in the local planning office for the last nine months.”
“Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.”
“But the plans were on display …”
“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”
“That’s the display department.”
“With a flashlight.”
“Ah, well the lights had probably gone.”
“So had the stairs.”
“But look, you found the notice didn’t you?”
“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard’.”

I've read, "Restaurant at the End of the Galaxy", I just don't currently have it. I owned the Ultimate Guide in the mid-80's that had all but "Mostly Harmless". I gave it away to someone that had never read any of them, expecting that I could always replace it, and have not found it again. I'm going to order "Restaurant" from Amazon this weekend, along with a BlueRay copy of the movie...

I have the 5 part series in one book after buying the first three in paperback, loaning them out, and never seeing them again. I found it at a Barnes and Noble in the bargain book area for like $9.99 awhile back. I see Amazon and Barnes have the whole 5 part series for $11.50 and $11.90 in paperback. Amazon list hard cover starting at $12.08 used.

“You know,” said Arthur, “it’s at times like this, when I’m trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I’d listened to what my mother told me when I was young.”

“Why, what did she tell you?”

“I don’t know, I didn’t listen.”

Thanks for the insight!

I remember from the 80s, when the Science Fiction Book Club had all five. The cover of one said something like redefining the word trilogy! Great books, and very fun BBC Radio show from that same time.

The cover of book 4, "So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish", says "Book 4 of the Hitchiker's Trilogy" along the bottom of the dust jacket...

In other book news, I am enjoying Andrew Chaikin's A Man on the Moon: the Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts on my daily commute. (Audible, as driving and reading a book are frowned upon by the highway patrol!)

Next up is another SF comedy, Connie Willis' To Say Nothing of the Dog. Makes me laugh every time!

Have you ever found a movie that you liked better than the book?  I've been thinking about that and I don't think I have.

Would you rather see the movie before reading the book or the other way around.

My vote right now would be to see the movie or series first then read the book. Seems to be more upside for me.

Of course the other option that has happened is like with Game of Thrones in that I saw the first few seasons on HBO then read all the books and then watched the newer seasons.  Please no spoilers I have not seen the newest season yet.
