Santal 33 (Le Labo) Australian sandalwood, cardamom, iris, leather, violet, cedar
Cardamom and iris make this sandalwood so smooth and creamy it starts to smell like hot rice pudding served in a new wooden bowl. It holds that note for the better part of a day, and then it dries down into soft shoe leather. Occasionally in the background I pick up peeps of violet and cedar and sawdust. With a little imagination, I smell coconut milk. This all works very well on the country side of the island. I'm not sure Santal 33 would be my first choice for a day in town.

Cuir de Russie (Chanel) soapy leather chypre
Rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang open this fragrance on a grand, old fashioned note. An ample dose of aldehydes gives everything the characteristic Chanel sparkle. The flowers last about thirty minutes before wilting away into a demure soapy leather laced with labdanum and incense. In dry down, this smells very much like Mitsouko. But just as the scent starts to feel comfortable, it slips away. The fun doesn't last more than three hours. I'm using Les Exclusifs de Chanel eau de toilette. I'm told older versions of this fragrance, especially the parfum, had much longer legs.
