I use old Spice every Christmas season, 4th of July, every other Holliday we celebrate, and before every special occasion that involves my boys. 8th grade dances, school assemblies, etc. It’s the only time I use old spice. I love the scent of it but there is a lot better aftershaves out there in today’s market. Old spice is never used in day to day shavedom.
I use Old spice on these occasions for two reasons and two reasons only
1. Old Spice will be around in 50 years. It may be a different formula but it will close enough that it “smells like dad”. Just as to my nose it smells like my Dad and my Grandpa. I would prefer that they associate ghost town barber, or Roam or Hallows or a million other scents as “smelling like Dad” but with Artesians coming and going, killing scents after a few years, there is no way to sustain the same scent profile associated with good times and great memories other than those manufactured by huge companies.... regardless of how many times they change the formula, it will be “close enough” to strike a nostalgic memory. Can we say for certain your favorite soap maker and scent today will be around when your son and or daughter is 30? Will they be making the same scent they are today or one close enough to what you wear and enjoy today?
2. Scent is most powerfully tied to positive memories. Wear a scent you want your kids to remember at events that are sure to be remembered and remembered in a positive light. We associated dad and grandpa with old spice because they had limited options. However, numerous studies show our sense of smell actually triggers the memory it is associated with good or bad. Sitting on dads lap by a fire on Christmas Eve and old spice in the air invokes fond memories just as that same scent on an assault victim whose attacker was wearing that scent renders A traumatic memory.
Many of us have lamented here as to how wet shaving reminds us of watching our fathers do it, or our grandfathers do it and how old spice or scents similar take us back to fond memory A or B.... in today’s wet shaving market with so many wonderful soaps and scents, if you want the same nostalgia for your son’s and daughter’s pick a scent that will be around when they are 30-40 and wear it on events that are memorable and sure to be remembered.
