I do not like using unscented soaps; I enjoy the aroma of a beautifully scented soap too much to miss out on that part of the shave.
However, I do have sensitive skin due to Rosacea and have to be mindful of the scents I use. I have trouble with any scent that has a high concentration of lemon, lime, grapefruit, cinnamon, cloves, peppermint, etc. These are all common sensitizers. I do have scents that contain these scent notes as long as the concentration is low. Thus, I tend to do a lot better with scents that are a complex blend of many scent notes rather than those that are more simple. With a complex scent artfully blended from a collection of scents, no single scent note is strong enough to be problematic. However, there are a few simple scents that do work for me such as pure lavender....just lovely.
Remember that some soaps contain basic ingredients that can be sensitizers or even allergens. Lanolin and glycerin are two possibilities. You did not list the soaps you have used recently that caused irritation. While it might be the scent that irritated your skin, it might be once of the soap ingredients. If you would provide a listing of the soaps that caused you problems I will check the ingredient list to see if there are any I recognize as potentially problematic.
