Unilever buys Dollar Shave Club

I will say this, I switched from Gillette Fusion/Pro Glide to Dollar Shave club, before I started wetshaving a couple years ago. I did notice a drop-off in quality. I felt like the blades on the Gillette were sharper and smoother and I also liked the flex of the Gillette a bit better as it did not flex as much to me, as the Dollar Shave Club chassis. So, I used more of the Dollar shave club carts because you got more, plain and simple but after a while, I still had a huge build-up of DSC carts. It was much cheaper to shave with the Dollar Shave Club razors, but the shave quality did drop off. The only thing I did not do with the Dollar Shave Club razors that I KNOW I did with the Gillettes was push them too far. Typically, I would keep using a Gillette well past its prime and end up with cuts/razor burn and just crappy shaves.

Honestly, if Gillette Carts were like .50 or 1$ a piece, I would probably have used one a week like I should have because thats was the perfect length the cart would last and give me good shaves, and I might never have looked further for wetshaving stuff, other than maybe soap/brush. I just could not imagine a Gillette Cartridge costing $5 or $6 though, and it troubled me because I felt like it was a freaking rip off and I wasn't getting essentially, what I was paying for. Its a freaking cartridge for crying out loud, how are you going to charge me %500!! With Gillette exploding in price, and Dollar Shave Club carts kinda sucking to me, I decided to start looking elsewhere to improve shave quality and get more for my money and here I am. I am certainly spending more money now, but shaving is now for the first time in my entire life, something I purely enjoy and I do it every single day. The shave quality and satisfaction I get from using what I use trumps how much I spend now. Its a hobby for me.

Have owned 50-60 new top DE and SE razors since 2011, after much thought decided to sell the lot in early 2016, because Fusion first pass and Mach 3 second pass + touch up gives me the constant best shaves of my life.

So you do not traditional wet shave, in the standard definition of using a safety razor plus brush and soap, but do wet shave using cartridges plus brush and soap?

I got nothing against that, just curious.

I know the SOP is to bash disposables and cartridges but if they work and give equal or less irritation than a safety razor, there is no need for a safety razor and cartridges can be found about anywhere whereas not so true about DE or SE blades.

personally I find the gillette guard to be a nice disposable...of course it only has a single blade and it's an open comb...it's not the easiest to find here in America though. I think gillette was going hard after people selling them on ebay.

I use Harry's for my head shave. Pretty comfortable and consistent. The fusion blades worked great too, but it just killed me to spend $28 or so for an 8 pack. Gillette says you can get a month out of their blades, I never even came close. 1.5-2 weeks max.

It's beyond me why it is people, especially rookies, can't seem to understand, that a cart can be used with what the shaver prefers:
shaving gel, shaving foam, shaving soap or shaving cream

The reason why I asked was simple. Most shaving forums or commercial websites in this industry demonize disposables or cartridges as the scourge of the earth. They try to convince "newbies" that safety razor blades are "sharper" than the blades in a Gillette cartridges. Propaganda (back to Bernays) is used to denigrate canned shaving cream or gel as "canned goo". This is SOP by those that want to gain converts to the altar of "traditional wet shaving". Demonize that which they don't like. It doesn't matter if its "artisan bread" or "artisan soap", this practice is common.

I found it interesting that in this virtual world, where cartridges are demonized as the purveyor of in grown hair, irritation, inability to get a BBS, and the scourge of Western Civilization due to the outrageous 35% profit margins of Gillette - that anyone would admit they use them in this august company. Like I said - I got nothing against that. I can get just as close a shave with a cartridge than with a single blade. They BOTH work.

If I could use a cartridge without irritation and ingrown hairs, I would keep some around for the odd occasion I need a quick and easy shave. If they work for someone there simply is no sense in bagging them or the individual choice to use them. We all gotta choose what works for us individually.

I just cannot get a good head shave from them. And I even tried using traditional soap and brush along with gentler techniques and "reduction" rather than "removal" and still could not manage a comfortable shave. I still ended up with a scalp full of ingrown hairs.

I'll stick with my inexpensive vintage razors and traditional methods. They work well for me...

I'm not saying all, but especially rookies - but yes, from the way you express surprise over the fact, you can use any combination of shaving gear, that works for each individual, you do sound like you lack a bit of experience. This is not meant in a negative way, we have all been there at one stage.

I have tested, owned and used a variety of 60-80 DE and SE razors since 2011 - only new razors, not vintage stuff, and a couple of Japanese Straight razors, and while most of them provided me with fine shaves, they just did not improve upon the shaves I got with my Fusion and Mach 3.

I know very well you have these guys on the shaving forums, that feel the need to express their opinion regarding their hatred for carts in as many posts as they can manage to find to reply to. They will even come in to a cart subforum, where people are asking about their favourite cart and express how much they hate carts.

I honestly believe, that if Gents used a proper pre shave routine, a good brush and a good shaving soap/cream and the same shaving technique you use with a DE/SE razor, they would get fantastic shaves from using most carts.

But people seem to think of this as black and white.

Either you use:

A brush, soap/cream and a DE/SE/Straight

OR

A can of goo/gel and a cart

WHY do people think they are forced to use a can og foam/gel with a cart and not a brush and shaving soap/cream ?
I have no answer to this other than a lot of people are very narrow minded.

You don't come of as narrow minded, actually you sound very analytical into details about all the things you write about.
So I would have guessed you would know, that you can use what ever that works for you and forget about what the narrow minded guys are limited to comprehend

Well, we all have different experiences. I was on cartridges until about a month ago and feel like I've died and gone to heaven with wet shaving. I still have cartridges and would use them if needed, like on a day when I have to be out of the door really early. Other than that, I enjoy the ritual and process around wet shaving. I'm getting significantly better results with wet shaving, though certainly wouldn't blame anyone for using whatever best fits their needs.
