Travel Shaving

Anybody else look forward to travel shaving? I don't just mean using a special "travel razor & brush", although that's a large part of it for me. I mean shaving under conditions that are often less than optimal. The most challenging situation I've encountered was using my trusty ShaveCraft 101 while traveling downriver on a canal boat. The quarters were cramped in the extreme! The 101 is the Crown Jewel of the iKon line IMO, fine shavers all.

I'll be traveling again quite soon, and I'm looking forward to using my new Stirling synthetic travel brush for a week.

No matter where I go, I aways have with me one of my BlackBirds neatly packed into an ATT travel pouch. Tabac or Sir Irisch Moos stick as well as either my M6 or Paladin PK 47 to complete the company.

During one vacation shavingconditions indeed weere suboptimal. Bad lighting, a darkish mirror, a brush that didn't agree with me, and me trying out a never before used (by me that is) vintage bakelite slant. I almost gave up on that razor right there and then. I did give up on the brush, threw it away.
Once home, I gave the razor one more shot and it turned out to be one of the best razors I own
That unmarked razor was later identified as a Sonnal.

Camping in the Rocky Mountains can have its challenges, but I always enjoy them, for a limited time, granted. I can only tolerate ice-cold water for so long.

Thank you for this thread and your comments on the Ikon 101 - I've been sitting on the fence wondering if I ought to add that razor to my collection. I have a few ikons and I like them all especially the 102 slant. You've helped me decide to go ahead and get the darn 101.

On the subject of traveling shaves, I've more often identified products to cull from my collection than uncovered gems. I don't know why I reach for that long unused whatever to be the one or two things I bring along but I often re-discover the reason for being long unused. I've committed that in future I will bring along the best of the best so I can have as good shaves on trips as at home. I won't bring a scuttle but a nice palm sized lathering bowl is on the list. And really, there is always room for a full sized tub of Barrister and Mann soap. One thing I did do right on my last trip was bring along a bottle of Chatillon Lux Fourth and Pine- what a nice aftershave with a scent that is not too out there and can be worn every day without getting tired of it. I'm looking for options brush-wise too. I have a Simpson Major traveling brush and its not the best performer. The format is great for travelling however.

The iKon 101 used to be my favorite razor, but I only liked the closed comb/safety bar side so I sold it. I went so far as to contact iKon to see if they had plans of making a model with safety bar on both sides identical to the 101, which they told me they will not be doing. It's a darn shame too. I see no point to dual head razors but I realize I'm only one person and that there are others who like them.

When I travel for work, I am gone for at least the work week at a stretch, ranging up to God knows how long.

In that bag, I have:

- Rockwell Razor
- Simpson Duke 1
- Simpson Classic 1 Synth
- 3 pucks Stirling
- 1 tube La Toja
- 4 small squeeze bottles AS
- 1 small bottle Witch Hazel
- Collapsible Bowl
- Extra Blades
- Alum Block

- I keep a Marvy Mug in my Suitcase

Trip to trip the soaps and AS may change, and if I am going to be gone more than a week a second razor might get added, but I pretty much travel with a mini den wherever I go.

If travelling by ground:

Edwin Jagger DE89 razor
Blades du jour
Arko shave stick
A pill bottle to hold the shave stick. There is a hole in the cap to allow the shave stick to dry.
Omega 50014 boar travel brush

If travelling by air:

The above, but with a Trac II razor and some spare cartridges. Double edge blades + airplane = hassle. Or sometimes I will take only an electric shaver instead.

I figure you can just about always get some blades at your destination, so a DE can go along on a plane no problem. If you wish to bring along blades, keep them (or cartridges, or straight) in cargo-luggage and NOT in cabin-luggage.

If space is at a premium I take this Travel Tech

There's space there for plenty of blades; certainly more blades than I'll ever need during a trip. The Feather blades seen here are just for the picture. I have loose blades in that place because a package just takes up room that's for blades. The case is designed so that the blade that's in use can stay in the head. The razor would normally be too mild for me, but 1-2 shims make it usable.

I like to bring a cream with me for soap, and a synthetic brush. I face lather so I don't need a bowl, but if I bowl lathered I'd probably still leave it at home and would just hand lather.

I agree Celestino, I just can't tolerate cold water shaving. Even when camping I would find a way to heat up some water.
