I saw this article today about changes in tipping practices, some related to the pandemic, others seeming to be pushed by business owners.

And that led me to look for posts about tipping of barbers. My wife cuts my hair, and I don't go to a barber; but if I did, I would tip him or her, since they provide a service that takes time, effort, attention, and skill.

John, I too, read that CNN bit about electronic tipping.  I'm happy to tip the baristas at my local coffeehouse but I always tip in cash, even if I'm using another form of payment.  When in a restaurant, once again, my tip is usually in cash no matter the form of payment I use for the bill itself.  The only time I refuse to tip is when a restaurant automatically adds a gratuity on to the bill.  There is absolutely no excuse for that as a tip is to be given for good service and should not be considered a given.  Ironically, when a gratuity is added on to my bill, it is usually less than I would give if left to my own discretion.

I always tip my barber well and also give him a holiday bonus.  He is a great barber and one of the friendliest people I know.  I've had too many really awful haircuts in my life to not let him know how much he is appreciated.

I agree, Freddy. Years ago I used to have my hair cut by a woman who did men's and women's hair care in her own shop, who not only cut my hair, but also trimmed my mustache and eyebrows and gave me a great scalp massage. You can bet she got a tip every time.

If your budget will allow, always be generous when tipping.

With routine services like my barber and massage therapist, I tip after every service, but also give a bonus tip at Christmas.

I go to breakfast every week with several friends. I will tip the server well each week, but also we provide a bonus tip at Christmas.

When I eat out with my wife, my usual tip is 20%, but when a server makes the meal special, I will tip even more.

I know some people will leave no tip or a small one when service is poor. Many workers rely on tips for economic survival, so I tend to tip anyway, unless the server is rude, a situation that is rare.
