Argos was the name of the mythical man who built the first ship. He was helped by the goddess Athena, who gave him the tools and the know-how. His ship, which he modestly named Argo, was made of the finest timber and fitted out with a sail and fifty oars. The prow could navigate by itself or offer the sailors directions. The crew included all the greatest Greek heroes: Jason, Hercules, Orpheus, Theseus, and many more. They set out on a epic adventure to retrieve the golden fleece.

Following in the wake of the Argonauts, I am embarking upon my own odyssey. This journey, however, requires no sea-swept voyages nor duels with dragons and sirens. This epic will unfold over the tepid waters of my sink. My quest? To see a tub of Eufros Argos through to its foamy end. It promises to be a tale of quiet valor, a testament to domestic heroism, filled with trials, tribulations, and challenges that will test my character. Come along if you like.

Shave 3

I love reading journals, diaries, and logbooks—Pepys’ intimate chronicle of Restoration England, Lewis and Clark’s earnest notes on their trek across North America, Lawrence of Arabia’s bewildering meditations on war and food in the Arabian desert, Cook’s oddly compelling logbooks from his Pacific voyages, Scott’s heartbreaking entries from his return from the South Pole. They captivate with their honesty and convincing detail. In this shaving journal, I can't promise such greatness, but detail—I can manage that. Expect lots of minutiae bound together with lengthy dry patches. The good parts, if there are any, will grow out of the insignificant bits that make up these daily observations.

To begin, we’ll start with a reply to your question, What does Eufros' Argos smell like? Lemon, rosemary, thyme, and patchouli are the notes I get. This fresh citrus, softened by a creamy whisper of spice, suits both cool mornings and blistering afternoons. An added pinch of menthol followed by a spritz of Dior Eau Sauvage completes it perfectly.

I chose to devote this journal to Argos since that’s the last shaving soap I bought. Let’s hope it’s the last tub I ever buy. Why? Over two hundred pucks lie tucked into the corners and crannies of our sea shack, proof of my slipping grasp on sanity. Needless to say, the clutter has begun to irk both Mrs. Bouki and me. It disrupts the peaceful harmony that ought to prevail at home. So, to restore our domestic bliss, I decided to adopt a more disciplined consumption: pick one tub and use it, wholly and resolutely, to its end, and then throw the empty away. Choosing the soap was simple: I followed the time-honored principle of ‘last in, first out’. Argos is my youngest soap, so it’s the first to go down the drain.

Each Sunday morning I’ll weigh the puck. Using this data, we can eventually predict when the soap will expire. Like most new tubs, Argos is dry. It soaks up a gram of water with each shave. So at this point, it’s now three grams heavier than when I first uncorked it. It will take about ten shaves before we can measure shrinkage.

Thanks to RayClem and his blade evaluations, I ordered some Gillette 7 O’Clock SharpEdge blades, the ones in the yellow pack. They’re supposed to be fairly mild in terms of sharpness, but very smooth. I’ll report on their performance tomorrow.

And as a side note, today's Washington Post has an article on ’sustainable’ shaving. You may recognize a few names.

The Gillette 7 O’Clock SharpEdge blades that come in the yellow pack are splendid. They’re not super sharp, but for my patchy beard, they’re just right. Anything much sharper, and irritation wells up. Anything much duller, and the scraping gets to feeling tuggy. They’re also very smooth. Put them in a mild razor like the Karve Bison and you’ve got yourself a light and breezy shave.

Argos is still taking on water at a rapid rate. (See the graph below). In fact, it’s four grams heavier after today’s shave than it was after yesterday’s. I’m loading with a nearly dry brush, and I'm letting it dry for eight hours before it goes to the scale, so it must be soaking up the ambient humidity.
