I believe that you will not be disappointed. It's a great start to a new year of shaving.

I ordered and received one of these a couple weeks ago. I had never tried an adjustable DE razor before. For the 1st 2 years of DE use, I'd only had an Edwin Jaggar.
As I 1st tried it with an astra blade on a 2 setting, it felt kind of rough compared to the de89. So I dialed it back a little. The shave was ok, but clearly I had some technique issues to work on with this new "heavy" razor.
For the remainder of the week it stayed about the same.
I was starting to think it perhaps wasn't for me.
Week 2 I tried one of the shark blades that shipped with it. This for 3 shaves, all at setting 3 or lower gave me more irritation than I've had since beginning wet shaving.
Now I'm really second guessing this purchase.
So a couple days ago I pitched the shark for a feather (hated these in the de89). Wow! This thing is transformed! Now I see what everyone likes about it! Smooth and sure. Either my technique is improving, or this blade is working much better than the first couple I've tried.
It's a keeper!

Yes welcome to DFS. Smile

Your discovering such a well thought out head design. The Variant is essentially the same as the Progress/Mergress and calibrated correctly. I personally love using it on 2-3 days growth.

Super Safety Razors have stock of the Variant today with a new 'Electroplated Finish-Graphite Color.'
Looks like they fixed any flaking problems.

I quite enjoy mine, but I find it much more aggressive than the Progress. Setting 1 on the Variant seems to be congruent to setting 3+ on the Progress. Shy

Yes, I have noticed that too. I don't think I've taken it above 2.5 or 3 yet.

Mark, who modifies the Progress into a Mergress recommends a light mineral oil dressing for the mechanism and mentioned how very thin the chrome plating is. It is also unnecessary to relieve spring tension between use. Progress razors have that tiny triangle and line that must be matched for the adjustment to function. Do Parkers share this
detail unmentioned by Merkur?

The calibration scale on the parker is just for giggles really. Same can be said for the merkur family as well.
