Post shave feel is not as important to me as I once thought. After I shave, I don't want any soap on my face---no matter how expensive or inexpensive, so I rinse with witch hazel.

Biggest change for me. I use to shower then finish with a shave. I reversed that a few years back and couldn't be happier.

The soaps i use are to get me the closest shave possible without irritation. After the shower the choice of splash/balm really tell the tale of how well things went.

A dear friend of mine, back in 1979, quoted an adage of his father that always stuck with me: "S*it, Shower, Shave". That's been my motto ever since. Happy2

May I suggest a couple of responses:

1, We are blessed to live in a golden age of soap base advancement.

The advancements amongst the artisans pursuing performance perfection versus chasing profit or political agenda has led to significant improvements in every facet of soapmaking ranging from stability to ease of lathering to cushion and glide balances to postshave ( which in turn covers such diverse elements as eliminating residue to post shave dermatological benefits ).  Hell, taken further, even packaging to promotion to distribution has been enhanced and is a critical element of the soapmaking process for artisans selling their products ( also benefitting the customers ).

The soap production process of soapmaking has experienced a particularly strong run of innovation the last 15 years and, while yet seeing advancements, appears to be taking a back seat of late to the distribution side of the business in the last year ( but again benefitting artisan and buyer alike for the most part).

Point being, innovation is not a straight line unbroken journey ad infinitum; it occurs in spurts and sometimes stalls for periods ( hopefully not extended ).

As with athletic pursuits, there needs be patience for the natural state of affairs to take its course accompanied by an appreciation of progress to date.

2, There appears to be some that disparage a benefit to others for which they don't need nor have regard.

I am truly quite happy for those blessed with normal or good skin, feeling no need to ridicule their good fortune nor wish them the suffering with bad skin suffered a life time. It is baffling why anybody would feel misused that some receive a benefit for which they have no need but there you have it.

Honestly, my wish is for some so lacking to develop a sense of empathy for the sake of their happiness as much as the sake of others. It surely cannot be a happy life being upset that others' lives were made a little easier.  That is not snark but rather genuine wishes that  they may find peace.

3, Why the disdain for hobbyists and influencers?

I have outlined here numerous times - only joined fora to mitigate the extreme pain experienced shaving throughout life; had I a face without extreme disfigurement, and/or the ability to grow a beard sufficiently full, would simply let it grow as did Lincoln to cover the offending appearance.  In short, am not a hobbyist and loathe shaving. Really, any SOTD type posts were errantly ( and poorly ) done in an attempt to aid artisans - shaving isn't my interest at all other than accomplishing a physical need.

Irrespective, it bothers me not one bit that some take great delight in posting of their shaves, being blessed in artistic eye, artistry or prose. Same could be stated of influencers: I couldn't even convince self of something let alone others BUT feel no malice towards those so inclined.

We really need reflect on why we feel such depth of negative emotion towards those we share different perspectives and instead focus both inward to better self and outward to make a better life for others.

Of course, when people are hurting others, particularly intentionally, that is another matter.

In defense of BPman , he did say " with exceptions made for those with severe skin conditions" in his OP. I think sometimes there is a tendency to disparage other peoples' predilections and biases as a way of affirming one's own choices. I certainly have strong opinions about what works for me and have to make a conscious effort to not denigrate other peoples' different choices when posting here. I do not always succeed. So, rather than imputing negative intent to the comments of others, I prefer to believe that it is attributable to carelessness and haste rather than negative intent.

I am reminded of the very first acronym I encountered when first venturing into traditional wet shaving, as it’s called and that was YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. It’s all subjective and what works for you may not for others and what you love maybe hated by others. It’s a good acronym is as applicable today as it was 10 years ago.

I hear you but it communicates the concept with a significant economy of words.
