My first razor was a Norelco 2-head electric when I was a teenager.  I have tried a few others but have never had a completely comfortable or close shave from one.  For me, a quality cartridge (or, obviously traditional wet shave) razor is always more desirable.  Also, I find using a floating head Gillette Fusion razor and canned gel takes about the same time or less as using an electric.

As for travel, I see more downsides to upsides with an electric razor.  A travel size can of gel or foam and a Gillette Fusion razor probably weighs less than an electric.  There is no worry about whether or not there is an electrical outlet in the bathroom where my travel may take me.  While traveling internationally, I don't have to bring along an electric converter and country specific plug (and those electric converters can be heavy). I don't have to worry about recharging a Fusion in the middle of a shave.

Obviously, each of us has a different beard type and comfort level so what doesn't work for me can work for others.  However, I would only use an electric razor if there were no other options.
