My Tatara showed up last night, I have to say it is a modern looking and feeling razor, simple streamlined but functional, it has it's own charm. It looks like it clamps the blade well I will be waiting until the weekend for my first use. I'm hoping it will shave as well as it looks, can't wait.

While Paradigm 17-4 is this time No. 1 in my den, I sold Tatara. Tatara is lighter and I can´t use there my favourite UFO handle ...

Tatara OC - slightly more aggressite than Paradigm without beeing so smooth ... For me unnecessary ... My rating 6/10.
Tatara SB - this baseplate works for me very well. Slightly less aggressive than Paradigm with less efficiency and similar smoothness ... My rating 9/10

I also prefer 17-4 to Pradigm Ti I. and looking forward to Paradigm Ti II. ...

Had my first shave with the Tatara OC. Very mild shave but also pretty efficient. 8 hours later and still feeling smooth, with no weepers or irritation. Tamed the Feather for me as this was the first good shave I've had with a Feather. Going to switch to a med prep tomorrow as I need more smoothness from a blade, but I think the Tatara is a keeper in the rotation especially with sharp blades. I'd rank it inline with my Timeless and Blackbird in shave quality and a step below the 17-4.

The Tatara has performed better with each successive shave and is a pleasure to use.

If looking forward to using a razor qualifies it as a winner, then the Tatara Masamune is a winner!

I agree! I think it’s magic with a feather!

After a week of daily use, I may have a significant change of heart regarding the Tatara razor. With a fresh very sharp blade (I used a Feather and a Med prep), I have been able to get two irritation free and smooth BBS shaves with no issue. Anything after two shaves, and the Tatara seems to become too mild for my coarse beard and I have found in order to get to a BBS shave without irritation becomes increasingly difficult. My one condition in keeping any razor (and blade for that matter) is that I should be able to get seven BBS (or very high quality) shaves with one blade. All the razors in my collection meet this requirement (some easily go beyond the seven shaves) with the exception of the Tatara. This razor may be coming to a B/S/T near you soon enough, in hopes that someone with a less demanding beard and/or over the top razor expectations may be able to give it a good home...

You are one of the few I know that can get seven shaves out of a feather. I hear of others boasting about 20+ out of a polsilver. My only question is: Why? Blades are so damn cheap so I have no idea why people try and stretch them out that long. Serious question. Why is that a requirement for you? I'm just curious.

I only got to shave one time with a Tatara and liked the shave, one of these days a good friend of mine will drop his Tatara off so I can have a week or two to test it (and possibly buy one).

On a side note: I normally get 5 shaves out of a Feather but the last months I noticed that there is one razor (17-4) where I can get a lot more shaves out of a Feather blade, even stranger is that the shaves seem to improve the longer the blade is used Huh (not that I'm looking to get more then 5 out of a blade).

tl;dr - Slight OCD tendency and desire to keep my collection minimal drive my desire to stretch blade life.

Actually I'm not a fan of the Feather blades at all as I have never been able to get a smooth shave with them with the exception of the two initial shaves I got with the Tatara/Feather combo. As far as the stretching out a blade thing, it's more of the Monk in me to want to go 7 days with 1 razor and 1 blade. No science or cost aspect plays a role in my decision, it's just a slight OCD thing that I can't get past. Now if there's anything else driving me, it's the desire to stay within a reasonable number of wet-shaving items in my collection. At no time have I ever had more than 4 soaps in my collection, 4 brushes in my collection or 12 razors in my collection. I also tend to stick with one brand of blade (of each kind of blade) in my collection. I'm currently testing blades without wax spots (another peeve) to replace my beloved PolSilvers. That all being said, I tend to not hold on to a razor or blade that doesn't give me 7 consecutive days worth of shaves and that keeps me within my self-imposed threshold of items in my collection. I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment on cost and if my brain was wired different, I'd go all berserk and switch multiple aspects of my shave routine at least daily. Damn you brain and your overly structured ways!

For me, I usually get 10+ shaves with the Wizamet Iridium Super blades and I continue to use them for this long because they are very smooth and comfortable, so I don't see a reason to discard them. Shy

I like your style, merelymoe. I wish I could establish some self-imposed limits and adhere to them. I hate wax spots too, but Polsilvers are also one of my favorite blades.
