We have an update for the Muramasa.

After receiving the reviews of the Muramasa, we are delighted with the feedback and your superb remarks. However, we noticed that the adjustable dial could be made smoother. That is why we took some time to discover how we could make a smoother adjustment without compromising the innovative adjustable system.

As you know your Muramasa uses an O-ring responsible to absorb vibrations and tighten the adjustable system. What we understood is that if we worked on a new o-ring, we could reduce the force required to change settings on the Muramasa.

We are now introducing a new redesigned Red O-Ring which you can replace instead of the Black O-Ring if you experienced stiffness in turning the dial. If your Muramasa adjusts smoothly around your fingers already then you do not need to change the O-ring.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BOTH O-RINGS

Black O-Ring

Made out of Rubber (can dry with the time)
Internal Ø: 7 mm
Thickness: 1 mm

New Red O-Ring

Made out of Silicon (auto lubricant material)
Internal Ø: 6 mm
Thickness: 1 mm

We are now including the new redesigned Red O-ring in all Muramasas, and we will be shipping the Red O-Ring to everyone that purchased the Muramasa before the 21st of October.

The shipment will be done with normal shipping so please be patient and expect the delivery between 10-20 working days.

"We will keep working to bring you more and more amazing products"

The new O ring has already arrived at the next passaround participant's home along with a repalcment key.

Would be interested to hear how the new O ring works. I tried the 8x6x1 mm O ring on my razor and it's much too small to retain the adjustment column - it ends up just falling out (unless later versions have different internal dimensions). Silicone however is a good idea for material (Nitrile or Buna rubber can indeed dry out and change dimensionally), and the silicone 9x7x1 mm O rings work just fine.

ExtraProtein is in the batter's box.  Confident he will give a good accounting

Thanks to DanLaw for arranging the passaround and of course to tatararazors for the hardware and Barrister_N_Mann for the software.

B&M software is always great. This new software was a modified Soft Heart, and was of course excellent. The new Omnibus base is even better.

The Muramasa is a great piece of hardware. It seems at times, for many hobbyists like us that have tried a lot of razors, that there is little left to innovate in terms of a DE razor. Then the Muramasa comes along. As Dan has written, what they have done is to create an adjustable that changes both exposure (and gap) simultaneously. This is a true conceptual and engineering innovation.

I think this is an excellent razor. I had one shave on each of the settings. I was able to get a good shave on each so in that sense each setting 1 through 5 is was useable for me. My favorite setting was probably 3, followed by 4 and 5.

For me the key question was is this razor owning given that I own the both Masamune and Nodachi top caps and base plates. I think a case can be made that it is not superfluous at all. The razor feels slightly different - although it is in the same line - and the convenience of being able to capture that full range - and even more - in one razor, is a marvel to me.

The entrepreneurs at Tatara are true innovators. Congratulations on bringing a winner to the market.

APPLES and Oranges on this O-ring situation…. From trifling to smooth operator AFTER the swap out

I’m no engineer, but I would want a bag of these o-rings on hand…..

Interesting that the smaller ring works on yours (I assume that's what you're saying).  On mine it's like having no ring at all, which just allows the adjustment column to sort of spin around with no resistance.  That says to me that perhaps there was some sort of dimensional change in the milling process somewhere along the line.  I've now tried a range of O rings, including 8x6x1, 9x7x1, and 9x6x1.5 in Nitrile and Silicone, and I found that the original size (9x7x1), and the original material (Nitrile rubber) works best in my razor for both setting and retaining the setting.  I've also not noticed any sort of wear at all, so I'm guessing these rings will last a long time in either material.

Have you tried the official replacement O Ring offered from Tatara?

Yes - 8x6x1, as above, along with the same size ring I purchased.  Just to clarify my observations, photos below (excuse the low-res phone photos), for those unfamiliar with the mechanism:

Adjustment column assembly (the adjustment column fits inside the adjustment sleeve, and numbers are visible through the round window):

Interior of sleeve (interior groove noted):

8x6x1 O Ring (left to right - 8x6x1 silicone, 9x7x1 silicone, 9x7x1 Nitrile, 8x6x1 on adjustment column):

9x7x1 O Ring on adjustment column:

You can see from the photos that the 8x6x1 (red) ring is virtually flush with the width of the adjustment column - it does not engage the interior groove at all.  Consequently there is no resistance to the column turning - in fact the column isn't retained inside the adjustment sleeve if you invert it - it just falls out.  The 9x7x1 ring (black, the original) extends past the column width just fractionally - but enough to engage the interior groove and retain the column inside the sleeve, even if inverted or shaken.  This is apparently enough to give the column some resistance in adjusting - a feeling I prefer - and it keeps the adjustment ring from just free-wheeling when you turn it.  The 9x7x1 silicone ring does the same, but is more flexible and therefore looser in the assembled mechanism and allows some play in the ring when turned - not a desireable feature.  I've therefore concluded that the original (Nitrile) OEM ring serves me best in my razor.

But specifically, have you tried the alternate O Ring supplied directly from Tatara

The reason asking is I HAVE a spare in possession if you have not; it would be advised to try their ring prior to giving up.  Will gladly ship it to you in ConUS

Fully realize you have sized everything but suggest giving Tatara's supplied solution an opportunity prior to quitting on it.
