Hello everyone, today im giving a 1st impressions of Talbot Shaving. This is my 1st product from them, and i purchased this with my own money.

**Items Used**

* Edison Lake Soap
* Captains Choice North Aftershave
* Maggards 22mm 2 Band Badger
* Gillette Fatboy

**Scent**

Notes are oak moss, juniper berry, cedar wood and clary sage. I am by no means any good at describing scents, but this soap is described as crisp, woody, aquatic air. I don't get that at all from this soap. I can smell what i think is the oak moss, and a strong citrusy scent. I'm not sure where the citrus would come from, but that is what dominates this scent for me. I'm not a huge citrus fan, so I'm not a huge fan of this. When I lathered it, the oak moss died down and I get more of the cedar wood, albeit very light. I would rate the strength at a 4.98 out of 10, meaning it's pretty light. The scent mostly disappeared after finishing up shaving, and after putting on aftershave it was gone completely.

**Performance**

I was able to get a nice thick paste rather quickly, and a dense lather pretty easily. The soap performed pretty well, I'd rate it at 6/10 on slickness. Once I shave off the soap, slickness was non-existent. Applying water helped remedy this, but only to a certain extent. I wouldn't want to pass over again without applying more lather. Cushion was good, a 7/10, nothing stellar but not bad either. It did its job, nothing more, nothing less.

**Post Shave Feel**

Unfortunately for me, this soap dried me out a bit. This was a bit unusual for me, as this is a tallow soap, and I've only ever had that problem with a couple of vegan soaps. It did leave my face feeling soft though, just dry. Not sure how or why that works, but that's just my experience.

**Final Thoughts**

I believe in the saying that gets repeated here often; Your Mileage May Vary. To me, this soap is pretty standard, it's not bad, but it's nothing to write home about either. It's considered unobtanium, ad if you can grab one in a trade then I say go for it, at least to try it once. I'm not a huge fan of the scent, and with standard performance, this one, to me at least, is not a keeper.[Image: 16c9af073edef794a3940aca3ecdddf2.jpg]

I love the performance. I compare it to my Czech & Speake performance and post shave feel.

The unobtainium aspect of a lot of these soaps drives up the hype factor considerably. Thanks for your honest thoughts and not just regurgitating the "It's the best soap I've ever used because I'm one of the 50 people that have it" review we always read.

Nice review, but a review of an unobtanium is...I can't think of the right word. I guess it makes no sense to me since I will never be able to use it. That's what a review is for, right? To assist others in purchasing a product.

Do you ever read car magazines? When they review a Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, etc., 99.99999% of the people reading the magazine will never even see one of those cars, much less drive, much less own one. Yet those are some of the most popular reviews.

The point of a review is to give one's opinion of the product.

That's what I thought as well but I deleted my opinion of the soap and any other mention of it. It's just not worth any anger or backlash. Forget it.

Totally agree about no anger or backlash. Life is too short and soap too meaningless in the grand scheme.

I must confess I've never heard of this soap and do not know the backstory, so my comment is about reviews in general and without any perspective about this soap.

Max, you are as much entitled to your opinion as anyone else.  If you think the product is great then by all means let's hear it.  If it's just fair or even pretty awful then let's hear that, too.  As long as any opinion is written rationally and with respect then I think the majority of our membership will have your back and the back of anyone else whose ideas may differ.

I happen to agree that a review is the writer's opinion and no one is suggesting there is only one right review so go for it.Happy2

nice review, I think the soap pairs well with Stirling Baker Street which is the AS i used. It's a 4 Dollar an OZ soap and i feel it defiantly performs above the soaps in that price range. It's a nice soap to have and i enjoy it but i also agree it's nothing to trade a first born for but def worth picking up on release. If you are looking to get rid on it though i'm your man LOL

Indeed. My apologies if my post sounded angry. It wasn't out of any sense of anger or backlash. Far from it. I'm quite happy with the soaps I have and others that are easily obtained. It's just nice to hear from someone who has a differing opinion sometimes and that not every new soap is the best thing since sliced bread. So opine away. I love reading people's opinions on products whether good or bad.
