I recently received my bottle of Tabula Rasa aftershave in the Steam Punk scent to match my shaving cream.

Their aftershave is a gel-like balm, with glycerin, alcohol and water as the main ingredients. In consistency it's very much like GFT Skin Food. A small amount, about the size of a pea, was plenty to spread over my face.

Performance: 8/10 It felt gently cool - the amount of menthol is quite small. In fact, I wasn't sure at first if it was menthol or just the alcohol in the mix evaporating. I did not feel especially moisturized

As per my usual MO, I applied it to a slightly damp face. (I rinse my face, then pat dry with a towel, leaving just a bit of dampness.) After a few minutes it was dry and my face felt soft, smooth and ready for the day.

Scent: 10/10 The scent is spot on the shaving cream of the same name. I love that scent, so this was great for me. As far as durability goes, I am still getting hints of it after 6 hours, so not bad at all.

Price: 5/10 At $28 for a 50ml bottle, the price is pretty steep. But given the small amount needed, it should last a good while. I'd suggest this only for shavers that are particularly interested in TR's scents - otherwise you get a better deal from Skin Food or other light balms. cough Like mine Smile

Clearance! Phil at Bull Goose has put the Tabula Rasa Aftershaves on clearance at his website for $10/bottle.[2] They have Steam Punk, Unscented, and "Blue." At $10, it's a great buy. (Blue is fresh grapefruit, fruits, flowers & creamy wood, Musk, Amber, Ceder)

Summary: Tabula Rasa Aftershave gel is a great product for people who want a balm with light moisturizing properties and great soothing. Unfortunately, it suffers from the inevitable markup that comes along with importing a product from Europe.

I don't have their AS gel, but I do love the scent of the shaving cream.

If you like the Steam Punk scent, it's a great time to pick it up over at Bull Goose. He still has some at $10/bottle.

Ah. At $28 I'm not sure I'd jump, even if I didn't already have more aftershave than I know what to do with.

If I'd paid full price I wouldn't feel like I'd wasted my money or anything... but the value isn't really there.

I love the Tabula Rasa Steampunk Shaving Cream (soap?) and after reading your excellent review I just ordered a bottle of the aftershave gel.

In your review you state that the consistency is very much like GFT Skin Food and I really like the way that goes on my face so that is a big selling point for me. Smile

Eric, I have now used the gel twice and I love it.  The application definitely reminds me of Geo. F. Trumper Skin Food.

However, I really don't find the scent of the Steam Punk Aftershave Gel an exact match for the shaving soap.  To me they are different but it turns out that is a good thing because the gel goes with several different EdTs that I use.  Today, for example, after using the Steam Punk gel, I finished with Floris Cefiro EdT and it proved to be a very nice matchup for me.

Nice. I definitely felt like it opened a bit differently than the shave soap, but the longer lasting scents smelled the same to me.
