One pass with a DE or straight? I wonder, as much as I love shaving now, would I be happy with one pass even if I could get away with it? I think the absolute bare minimum would be two passes just because I enjoy the experience so much.

DE. I recently got my FatBoy and Slim back from being replated and forgot how good my FatBoy shaves (took several months for replating). I really don't need more than one pass since I shave fairly often (every other day usually). I don't mind a little stubble in some spots. Plus, I shave at night and usually have a ton of other stuff I'm trying to do, so a 1 pass shave makes the most efficient use of my time. There are times that I'll do a second pass on certain areas, but I've enjoyed the 'freedom' of the 1-pass lately.

I have the exact same growth pattern on my right neck that you mentioned earlier. I have been shaving using DE/straight for about 2 years that still is a problem if I chase BBS. Only with a super sharp straight/Feather AC SS with a scything motion I can get smooth shave without irritation in that area. Going truly against the grain with a DE over there always causes me irritation.
All in all, I have given up chasing BBS, at least in those problematic areas. I might do 2 ultra light pressure XTG, but never truly ATG

I'm with you here. The experience is too nice to live on a one pass shave for me. I'm tentative to cut the third pass even, though I may go WTG then XTG both way and skip the ATG
I have also changed my daily (weekday) routing to two-passes. I do the first pass XTG and then a final pass ATG. I have found that not only does this avoid irritation, which I didn't have a whole lot of problems with, it cuts down my time needed and the results are the same. I wonder that if proper preparation is still taken, would less irritation be noticed just reducing the number of passes rather than focusing on the direction of the pass itself.
