SOTD MONDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 28, 2020

This morning’s shave was inspired by several members of the crew shaving with Gillette New Improved model safety razors. Mine doesn’t qualify as a ‘Bostonian’ as I lack the accompanying case, but the shave is what counts for me. This model and the New LC are probably my favorite Gillette dome shavers. After checking the Dubl Duck Goldedge 11/16 under the USB microscope, I noticed some very slight chipping along the middle of the blade. A touch up with the new Naniwa 12k I received for Christmas put that to hair poppin’ rights. And just for a change of pace, I grabbed my Nancy Boy shaving cream and balm. Since the bride left to babysit our granddaughter, I was also free to use a bit of Alt-Innsbruck as a finish. She’ll be gone for most of the day leaving me to supervise the contractors repairing the roof damage from the last storm.

Nancy Boy is one of the best shave creams I use, and probably the best kept secret in wet shaving. The company, established in 2002 does no advertising, and instead relies completely upon word of mouth for their marketing, plowing the savings into the best ingredients they can source for all their products. The Viking Silvertip Badger generated the two types of lathers I enjoy for my morning shaves. The Dubl Duck cleared away the mug whiskers in three passes (WTG, ATG, XTG). Glen Mercurio, the master restorer and honer, always talks up the Naniwa 12k as the ideal touch up finisher and I see why. The edge I refinished based on the techniques demonstrated in his exemplary video on this stone was sharp and buttery smooth. The New Improved is an incredibly efficient safety razor as well, and cleared the dome stubble right down to the skin line. I feel clean, smoothly velveteen, and smell great.

RAZOR: Dubl Duck Goldedge 11/16 (Mug), Gillette New Improved (Dome)
BLADE: Feather DE
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: Viking Silvertip Badger
CREAM: Nancy Boy Signature
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with Glyce Glycerin soap followed by Humphreys Lilac WH and Nancy Boy Signature Cooling After-Shave Gel. Finished with Alt-Innsbruck.

Razor: Blackland Ti Blackbird
Blade: Personna Red (1)
Brush: Simpson M7 Super
Pre-shave: Cold water
Soap: GD Unum
Post: GD Unum soap.
Two passes (WTG-XTG) plus touch ups.
Result:  BBS

Three days in a row with a ‘bird.  (SS-Ti-Ti).  What an amazing razor.  If I take good care, I’ve been able to get three days of BBS w/o cuts or irritation.  That’s with using a Personna Red having eleven and twelve shaves on it, with post-shave products, then the third shave this morning with a brand new Red and no post-shave beyond the soap.  The GD soap is also amazing.  Overall, excellent shaves.

Happy Shaves to All.

prep - shower with Caprina Fresh Goat’s Milk Original Formula bar soap
razor - Canadian Long-Comb New
blade - Shaverboy Super Stainless (7)
brush - Simpson Special 1 Best Badger
soap - Godrej Shaving Round
post - warm water rinse, DSA “Pure & Natural” alum, cold water rinse
aftershave - RazoRock's Irish Countryside
music - CBC Radio 1

I'm using Grandad's scuttle for this one because the Godrej is perfect for it. It has that raised rim to hold a puddle of water for blooming it, and because Godrej works well with a small volume of lather. (Williams Mug pucks too, but I think Godrej has the performance edge.) I'm sure that these scuttles were never intended for making liters of lather pr0n, only just enough to get the job done.
I used the Special 1 brush because it's small enough (20 mm) to easily fit in the bottom for soaking.
Once I start building the lather I don't put the brush back in the bottom part except to dip the tip for a bit more water.
Afterwards I put the puck back into the container and completely rinse out the scuttle.
If I used this soap and scuttle every day then I'd probably just leave it on the scuttle and only rinse out the bottom.

Results: CCS

It took me a while to recall what the Godrej scent reminded me of, and I eventually remembered the SNAP hand cleaner with pumice. Sort of like anise, maybe.
