Bill, I don't hate Cella but I don't care for it, either. I never quite understood the love Cella seems to get. Oh well, to each his own.

I have a box where I put my unloved soaps, aftershaves and balms. Generally any product whose quality or scent can't justify its use. I plan to do something with the box at some point, likely PIF it - on the one hand I feel bad passing on my rejects but YMMV as they say. Who knows? The stuff might find love after all, everyone can find someone at last call. Included in this box are such soaps as Sudsy Soapery - virtually unscented, OSP, again no scent to speak of, CRSW too mildly scented, there are a few that were once good performers but they've been outclassed by some of the new formulations on the market - they didn't get worse but the competition got better so into the box of no love they go.

I haven't tried many of the new soaps out there. I'm laying back in the weeds to see how they all play out. I am totally with you on this issue of scent strength though. Some folks like milder scents but after trying many many soaps, I'm at a place now where I like a stout scent. It just boosts the shaving experience. I want to smell the scent when I lather it, and I want to continue to smell the scent throughout the shave. If it disappears, I get bored with it. This is just my use case on scent though. I want to eventually get all of my soaps down to a place where every soap I own has a stout, strong scent. Ahh, if only all soaps had Tabac's scent strength life would be good for me! Nevertheless, I'm finding many brands that bring the heat when it comes to scent strength, Barrister and Mann being one of them.

I completely agree on scent strength and would echo everything SCShaver had to say. I don't think I would ever find myself using an unscented soap regardless of how well it may perform.

wyze0ne and SCShaver you both share my views on scent - the lack of scent is the #1 reason that soaps go into the box of unloved products. Some of these soaps I suspect were made unscented and then the maker put a variety of different scent names/descriptions on the labels. Its often a case of there being no discernible scent at all rather than just a mild whatever its supposed to be. I mean seriously, I even went so far as to exchange emails with one (OSP James) because his soaps had just come on the market and I wanted to provide feedback. I got a sandalwood and a bay rum and it cost me a lot to get them shipped - they were ok performers but virtually unscented. I couldn't tell the difference between the two, if I ever mixed up the lids I wouldn't be able to match scent to tub and it wouldn't matter anyway. The closest thing to a scent I could discern in these two was Probert's Saddle Soap. In any case James thought they were fine and apparently he'd had no other complaints so there. Maybe he's stepped up his scent game since then but I wouldn't know because I won't be spending my money to take that chance again.

You might love it or you might hate it but its got to smell like something. Preferably close to what the maker says its supposed to smell like.

Quote:Arko was a scent I just could not stand shaving with.  Its like industrial Ivory with a splash of lemon juice and man, it brings that scent in SPADES. It'd be one thing if it was lightly scented.

I'm not trying to convince you to give Arko another chance - I don't use it anymore myself - but when I first bought a stick I couldn't stand the smell for the same reasons and tossed it into a drawer. About a year later I thought I'd give it another try and found the scent had mellowed into something inoffensively tolerable - even somewhat pleasant. I ended up using it for about a year.

Several years ago I purchased Edwin Jagger Aloe Vera. This is the worst performing soap I had. So bad I wrote the company to tell the that maybe I received something from a bad batch. The were kind enough to end me a free refill of their Limes & Pomegranate. And this is as bad. I've had them several years but have not used them in several years. And the interesting thing, the one I purchased All Vera was not cheap.
