I had my 6 month check up with the dentist this morning. The hygienist was looking at me oddly but she's too polite to come out and ask what was different about my look. When the dentist came in she also paused for a moment. She asked if I switched to contacts or something. I said, "ahh yes I did go back to contacts." She said she thought I looked different... The hygienist agreed with a look of relief on her face... I suppose I might have worn my glasses there before in the past. I never had a mustache before though!

Hahaha. I guess it doesn't look too shabby then if they couldn't put their finger on what changed about my appearance. I've been going to the same dentist for years now. Luckily I haven't had to spend enough time time there to get too 'familiar'. I did promise to floss more. Like I do every visit. I pinky swear.

Good thing I didn't get a toupee. They would have really been stumped!

Me in 2013, before I resumed shaving.

It is an actual wet-plate (tintype) photo, not a photoshop filter.

I was showing off for my barber (who had just given the buzzcut) and he took the photo for his Facebook album.

May I offer three four tips then?
  1. Do not cut or trim anything above the lip. To keep it out of your mouth, train or wax it to go out sideways, not down. It makes for a fuller-looking 'stache.
  2. Continue to shave up to the corner of the lips (or nearly so). Do not try to "lengthen" the ends by allowing them to grow from beyond the corner of the lip, unless you want to connect them to muttonchops or some such perversion.
  3. Do not twist or twirl the tips of a standard handlebar. Curl or coil, yes, but do not twist them like a rope.
  4. If you plan to wax them (or göt2b glued spiking glue like I do), don't try to control any less than 3 hairs in a bundle at the tips. If you try to wax only 1 or 2 hairs, the tip will corkscrew or and generally look stupid no matter how much product you apply. Bite the bullet and trim the tips (symmetrically) back to where there are at least three or more hairs. Most important for English-style handlebar (straight out to the sides), or the "Salvador Dali".

Get one of these combs ...

... for applying product like spiking glue, particularly with the narrow end, and a nail brush or dedicated toothbrush for cleaning it out.
One of these small Kent folding combs fits nicely in the watch pocket of most jeans.

Also for applying spiking glue - a hair dryer.

Hahaha, that was the beginning of summer, I had a pretty good suntan going!

I had to get a stash going for Movember even if Photoshop was the best I could do! Having the facial hair of a 17 year old drastic measures must be taken!
