I have a photo from my youth in Scottsdale of Tucson at night. It was THE destination for mexican food VS the very anglo Phoenix basin and worth the drive past cattle, sheep and dairy ranches in our hemi Chrylser wagon. The lights were barely competition for the stars. Water, derived from the Colorado and Gila in AZ was, and is precious for livestock, cotton and people. Swimming pools were public. We are into summer temps here with a few opprtunities for rain. It hit 90 in a few areas and the snowpack, while to deep to measure in some stations needs a good 8 years of repeat performance to end our drought. I just walked in from collecting my veteran benefits' maybe $2.40 in deposit beverage containers. Some fool THREW AWAY a half pallet of 8 oz water bottles UNOPENED.
Like Walter Huston's dad said in TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE ' water is precious, sometimes more precious than gold." I'll take the snow.

Me too KAV, and the generally mild temps and low humidity of our summer. We pay now but get it back later when others stay indoors under the protection of their evaporative cooling units to dodge their "dry heat summer temps". Hot is still hot.

Plus the extreme cold and snow keeps many folks out who really can't exist here. We like the low population of where we live. We chose where we live for a reason and with full knowledge. Lots of people simply can't understand that.

Nephew just returned from a weekend campover/training class in winter camping up in Bishop. He was upset he didn't have all this hi performance clothing and wanted me to explain what vapour barrier liners were. I opened my chinese chest and produced a set of Norwegian brynje fishnet underwear, vintage Woolrich, Dachstein boiled wool mittens, fur troopers hat, Steger Muckluks from Minnesota and a canvas anorak with coyote trim. He asked about renting snowshoes? I pulled out the Hudson Bay point blanket and produced a pair of ash and rawhide Modified bearpaws from TUBBS. It took all of 5 minutes to demonstrate the lampwicking bindings.
He said the SEE AIR EEE CLUB instructor was horrified and used him as poster boy of what NOT to wear. He reported after being harranged for using endangered animal fur ( rabbit and coyote?) The instructor laughed at his fireplace snowshoes, caught his carbon set in a unseen snag and bending over to undo the harness broke his wrists and caught hypothermia from those killer space blankets.Guy was from FLORIDA.

Don't get me wrong. Spent my time in the cold. But it is hilarious to watch certain people who claim to know better and not listen to those before. Who not only survived but thrived in that environment. Great story KAV.

Coming from a region that only has two seasons, Summer and Summer Lite, I would welcome colder weather knowing that I could add additional layers of clothing for protection from the elements. In our sauna like environment, there is only so much clothing that can be removed and still remain socially acceptable.

Wearing clothing for cultural modesty has a point of foolishness but naturalism isn't for me. There is a slowly dying cult called raelianism. This french 'race car driver' name of Claude Vorilhon went hiking in an extinct french volcano and encountered a flying saucer. Now he claims to be their ambassador; uses a conjoined Star of david and Swastika as symbol and can't understand why Israel wont let him build his alien embassy there to welcome the space dudes and claimed to clone a baby. He advocated that cult bait of free love and attracted a lot of sex workers before moving to Okinawa to indulge his taste for asian barley legal cosplay girls.
The raelians still get annual news coverage by 'journalists' by holding a day of topless protest. It seems the space dudes are upset women are discriminated against unlike men for exposing their upper bodies. They do it in L.A. and I can assure you; seeing a bunch of 50 something ex strippers, escorts and assorted other ladies topless wants me to protest.
I just walked back from picking up my prescriptions. It's 87 degrees climbing and I just got my dressier cold weather dress clothing sorted out. I was pondering buying that southern classic; the seersucker suit, but got enough comments about my Sam Spade Burberry's from soaking wet boymen in flip flops and cargo pants running inside from their beemers.
