If you ever had the pleasure of using Dr. Bronner’s pure castile liquid soap, then you know the experience to be amazing. Especially when you use the peppermint it’s what I use all summer. Dr. Bronner has been around since 1858 and making soap in the USA since 1948. They pride themselves on being organic and I mean truly organic. But as I found out being great at soap making doesn’t always translate into being a great shaving soap maker and this is true with Dr. Bronner Organic Shaving Soap.

I purchased the 16-ounce tube and when opened I was real surprised at how runny it was. This dark brown liquid runs out so fast that you have to tilt it ever so slightly into the palm of your hand in order to control the flow.

I wanted to try two methods of lathering first with the bowl then face lather. During the bowl lather everything was going well I used my Razorock synth brush which made a great lather and as soon as I applied it to my face the disappearing act started. I created a time laps of 1:22 seconds to show the difference. I next cleaned up and started again following the instructions on the tube and did a face lather working it onto my already wet face. This yielded better results at first. I had a great looking lather going on. As I bent down to washed my hands which only took 20 seconds I glanced at the mirror and the same thing happened again no lather it had all disappeared.

I made up my mind to shave with it anyway and proceeded to use my German 37 Slant. When I was done I did get a close shave but had to go over the same areas many times to achieve it. Furthermore, I didn’t like the tacky feeling the soap left my skin. I could place my hands on my face and see in the mirror how my skin was sticking to them as I pulled them away. Since I cut myself during the shave I didn’t really trust it to do under my lip in fear I would cut myself again. I was going to use a different product to complete the job.

Sadly, I didn’t have a good shave and can’t recommending this shaving soap. I think the good Dr. should take a look at how a real shaving soap lathers and feels then go back and make the changes to the formula otherwise you can just call this a soap. Case in point take a look at the “Suggested Uses” and let me know after watching my YouTube video did you happen to see a good lather.

“Our Organic Shaving Soaps are great for both men and women. Squirt a little bit of Shaving Soap onto your hands (about the size of a nickel) and rub them together for a good lather.!”

I also have enjoyed Dr. Bronner's fine, liquid Castile soaps for many years -- good stuff! I believe that the shaving soap they offer is intended as "brushless". I haven't had any luck with ANY brushless creams I've tried. I guess I'm just fixated on lather for my shaves.

If it came down to a choice between water only, or water and this stuff, I guess I'd use it. I honestly think I'd rather use canned foam, if it was impossible to get one of my preferred soap & brush lathers. Cremo is another brushless that I tried and didn't care for -- passed it on to my wife who loves it!

A fan of the Dr. Bronner's soaps and their quirky labels since the 'hippy days', I was excited to try this shaving soap as well. My experience was the same as Wet The Face's. Disappointing all around, had to remove it after one pass.

has anyone reached out to them to see if there's any room for improvement on their end?

I checked out Wet The Face video last night. the lather looked pretty horrible and I was a little shocked that he braved it out and actually shaved with it!

You are, indeed, a brave gentleman shaving with that terrible lather. Shy

They make a lovely bath and body soap, but terrible shave soap.

Thanks for the review as well as "taking one for the team."

I noticed this "shave" soap at a local Wegmans supermarket and waited to buy. I love finding decent shaving soap and cream locally, but haven't had much luck finding many decent(let alone good) stuff locally. I'm glad I passed on this one. Sorry you had to have the poor experience, Wet The Face !
