Razorock German 37 Slant initial thoughts

After my first shave with this guy, I have to say.... It's a great razor.

It has nice balance, weighs in at 3.3 oz. and is sharp looking. The handle has a solid grip, but is just a tad longer then I'd usually prefer.

Now for the shave. This thing is on the aggressive side, and has a lot of cutting power. I'm going to say it's a 7 or 8 on the slim as far as aggressiveness goes. After the first pass the cutting power was really evident. The razor mowed down stubble better then some of my favorite razors.

This was the first slant that I have used, and I didn't have any problem. I kept my usual technique and everything went great.

At $20 I think this is a great deal and it has a worthy spot in my rotation.

It does seem to be similar, but I can't do a direct comparison as i haven't used the merkur.

I agree. I received my 37C from BadDad early this spring and it all but obsoleted most all of my vintage razors. In fact I almost have to force myself to use something different just to see if I still remember how to use them. That picture looks like a direct copy of the 37C, in fact I would have ID'd is as such if I werent told differently.

If it is a direct copy, I would expect it to shave just like the masterpiece known as the 37C.

I didn't realize this until now, but the original pic of the rr slant had a handle that looked more like the 37c.

The handle that they ended up using is a little different and appears to be a tad longer as well.

I got mine this weekend and used it yesterday. It was my first time using a slant.

Initial observations on the razor:

The threads on the head are not clean and the handle wants to cross thread it if you don't reverse it first. I am not the only person who experienced this so it is likely the one complaint with this razor. That said, it is a great looking razor. Especially for $20.

On to the shave. 2 days stubble. Face lathered with LPV. Having never used a slant I was assuming this would be extremely aggressive. It wasn't. It was aggressive, but not Fatboy wide open aggressive. I used a brand new Gillette Platinum blade. I changed nothing from my normal technique and got an amazingly close 3 pass BBS. No irritation at all. This razor excels against the grain. As I type this it has been almost 24 hours and my face is still pretty smooth.

Conclusion. This razor is very efficient and easy to use. Excellent shaver and certainly worth the price. The Bulldog handle that comes with it is real nice too. Has a nice weight and excellent grip. Thanks Joe for making an excellent slant at an entry level price point so guys can try it out without dropping a couple hundred on a razor they may not like. Unfortunately for me I feel myself compelled to try to get a Wunderbar or drop significant jack on an ATT.

This is a three-piece short screw variant of a Merkur 37c. In that way, t is a sort of crossbreed betwee a vintage Merkur 36 and a Merkur 37c.
The finishing of this Razorock 37 has its problems. The complaint heard most often is the threading on the screw can make assembling the razor a bit finicky. Were I to use this razor as a daily driver, or as one razor in a limited rotation that would annoy me.

As a razor, it shaves fine. I would not rate it that aggressive, more in the middle of the scale. Handling is fine, the shave is nice and deep but not too deep, and the head is very effective. Logical: it is a copy of the Merkur-slanthead as found ont he 37 and 39 and those are real good razors. This is actually my biggest complaint about this razor. Why copy the offering of another razormaker, especially when there are even more razormakers copying that same offering. Isn't it a lot more fun reviving an extinct vintage razor? Wouldn't that give us consumers more actual choice, instead of only a suggestion of choice?

It may be too obvious but I've received hundreds of emails from people that love the Merkur slant head but don't like the handles or 2 piece design. Being able to buy a head you like, inexpensively, and pair it to your favorite handle, for me, is a big bonus. Also, most people already have another razor, so now you can try a slant for $11.95, instead of $40-60.

The goal with RazoRock is to bring value to the traditional wet shaving community.
