When all is said and done, this - like any razor - is really just a metal holder for razor blades. Perhaps for some people it does the job slightly better than a different blade holder (but surely not $5,500 better). It is definitely not art - it is a razor. Is it so rare, irreplaceable, and important as a museum piece that it is worth such a premium to collectors? I think it is more likely that 50 years from now nobody will have heard of Raw Shaving or have the remotest interest in this company or any other short-lived, small volume razor manufacturer, so I don’t think this has much value as a collectable.

But, who knows, maybe somebody in China will buy this as a gift for a business associate who would truly value it. The price is trivial if it helps to secure a business relationship. But only if another one cannot be found for less than $6,000.

I’m giving this more attention than it deserves. There are just some strange people who will let an item sit forever at a crazy price just in case someone buys it.

I can assume that many people, like me, would be ashamed of both giving and receiving as a gift, a highly scratched object with remnants of dirt made recently.

Your opening sentence took my breath away. You couldn't of said it any better.

There was (maybe still is) a primitive bench strop made out of a tree branch and a piece of leather belt that was listed or $300-400 for YEARS on ebay. Pretty much anyone here would throw that thing on the burn pile without a second thought. But they were sure it was something valuable.

Well, not entirely true.

International shipment of items may be subject to customs processing and additional charges.
It must be much heavier than it looks.
